SUBJECT: FINAL DRIVE SPINDLE BEARINGS MAY FAIL
PROBLEM:
The spindle bearings in the 0R-9538 Final Drive and 206-3565 Final Drive may fail. This mode of failure can cause a catastrophic failure in the final drive. The 108-8053 spindle bearing fails due to a stress riser in the radius of the large end of the bearing flange.
SOLUTION:
Morton Stock has been reworked of possible defective parts. A Service Letter was issued on January 16, 2004, requesting inspection of final drive serial numbers.
The SOS reports should be monitored for sudden increase in iron (Fe) particles. To assist further in monitoring the condition of the final drives, 126-8921 Magnetic Plugs can be installed. This replaces the existing 9S-8008 Plug.
If a sudden increase in iron particles is detected or if iron particles are collected by the magnetic plugs, a closer inspection of the final drive is needed. Remove the cover and inspect the gears for possible damage.
A Service Letter will be released at a later date.
