PROBLEM
Certain 320D 2 Excavators have experienced excessive wear of the 138-2053 Valve Lifters (Image 1) resulting in the inability to adjust engine valve lash to within the specified serviceable limits through tappet adjustment alone. The accelerated wear of the valve lifter may also lead to accelerated wear on the camshaft (Image 2). New 464-6253 Valve Lifters is an improved part against wear. |

ACTION REQUIRED
This service letter does not apply if a 138-2053 Valve Lifter has not failed as in Image 1. If engine valve lash is found out of specification and requires adjusting within 300 hours following the previous valve lash adjustment (refer to UENR0673, "Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust") or if valve lash is unable to be adjusted to within the specified serviceable limits through tappet adjustment alone then a 138-2053 Valve Lifters may have failed. If the 138-2053 Valve Lifters has failed as per Image 1, then replace all the following components with new parts as per the work instructions available in Disassembly and Assembly, UENR0674, "C7.1 (Mech) Engines for Caterpillar Built Machines": - Replace all 138-2053 Valve Lifters with new 464-6253 Valve Lifters. - Replace the 350-0637 Camshaft with a new 350-0637 Camshaft. - The oil pump is likely to have been damaged due to metal particle ingress, replace the 373-8014 Oil Pump with a new 373-8014 Oil Pump. Replace engine oil and filter as per Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU9247, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change". Regarding the volume of engine oil and coolant required for the rework, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU9008. |
