Introduction

This special instruction is intended to provide information on how to replace the heaters, hold downs, and covers on the above listed screeds. The new design intended to prevent ground faults. The new heaters are essentially a drop-in replacement for the old, but new covers are required due to the slightly larger and taller heater to electrical cable transition "cup". The new heater hold downs provide better contact between the screed plates and the heaters, preventing thermal hot spots in the heaters and improving heater performance.

New screed S/N:J97313-374 will not need the new hold downs, they were assembled on the machine at the factory. These machines will not need the screed plates dropped, all work can be done with the screed plates installed.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Safety Section

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.

------ WARNING! ------

Failure to follow all safety guidelines prescribed in this document and by governing authorities and regulatory agencies may result in severe injury or death of personnel or machine damage.

------ WARNING! ------

When removing a major component or attachment, ensure that it is properly blocked or secured before removing mounting hardware. An assembly that is disconnected without proper blocking may shift or fall, resulting in serious injury or death of personnel or machine damage.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from improper maintenance procedures. To avoid injury or death, follow the procedures exactly as stated below.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from improper handling of chemicals.

Make sure you use all the necessary protective equipment required to do the job.

Make sure that you read and understand all directions and hazards described on the labels and material safety data sheet of any chemical that is used.

Observe all safety precautions recommended by the chemical manufacturer for handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.

------ WARNING! ------

Climbing equipment may be required to access this service point. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Mounting and Dismounting" topic for safety information.

------ WARNING! ------

Before servicing/performing maintenance on the machine, electrical power must be physically disconnected; battery plugs must be disconnected from the batteries, or the trailing cable must be unplugged, and warning tags and padlocks shall be applied by a certified electrician. Certified electricians shall perform or direct any electrical work, including any energized testing, repair work in controllers, motors, or other approved compartments, and shall insure that all compartments are properly closed and inspected prior to re-energization. All applicable lock out and tag out procedures must be followed.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate the machine if any guards or covers are missing or inadequately secured. Personnel could be seriously injured or machine damage may occur.

------ WARNING! ------

Observe the safe working load limits of all lifting and blocking devices and keep a safe distance from suspended/blocked loads. Personnel may be seriously injured or killed by falling loads.

  5. Install four new hold down clamp plate assemblies (1) using the hardware that were saved in Step 1. Orient the plates as shown in Illustration

Note: The new heaters have slightly larger terminating ends where the heater to cord transition takes place, and slight frame modifications are needed to prevent interference on the right and left extender frames. Older screeds have an additional plate which will also need to be modified as per dimensions shown in Illustration 6. Minimum clearance from the terminating ends to the frame should be 6.0 mm (0.24 inch) for both extender frames.

  6. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly Manual , UENR3148 to install screed plate, screed heater assembly (5) and screed heater assembly (6).

Install access cover assembly (2) and access cover assembly (3) using four bolts (F) that were saved in Step 3, and four hard washers (7).

  7. Route the heater harness in the same path as previous heater harness. Use new cable straps (4) to retain heater leads as previously routed.

  8. Tighten the connectors to 10.5 ± 0.3 N·m (93 ± 3 lb in), retaining with lockwire. Refer to Special Instruction , REHS9161 , "Procedure to Properly Connect and Disconnect the High-Voltage Connectors on "F" Series Asphalt Pavers" if required.

Note: The new heater connectors have a 38.1 mm (1.50 inch) hex shape for tightening the electrical connector. 566-7458 Socket As is available to aid tightening and prevent damage to electrical connector.
