Usage:
Problem:
Some of the above C-12 Truck Engines may experience the engine oil being diluted by fuel. Fuel can get into the engine oil either externally past the top injector O-ring seal or internally past the plunger and barrel.
NOTE: Fuel may leak past the joint between the plunger and barrel if there is a loose fit between the plunger and barrel. This type of leak would typically be noticed after only a few hours of operation.
Solution:
It is normal for a very small amount of fuel to be in the oil after the engine has been run for some time. An S·O·S oil sample will indicate the percentage of fuel in the oil. If the percentage of fuel in the oil is greater than 4 percent, that is an indication of excessive oil dilution by the fuel. Oil change intervals should be performed as specified in the owner's manual. Extending the recommended oil change intervals will cause the percent of fuel in the oil to increase.
If engine oil contains more than 4 percent fuel for a sample that is taken within the Operation and Maintenance Manual oil change guidelines, do the following procedure.
- 1. First inspect the 9X-7557 O-Ring Seal (1) on each injector. The 9X-7557 O-Ring Seal is the top O-ring seal on the injector. See the illustration.
- 2. If any of 9X-7557 O-Ring Seals are show any signs of damage, replace all of the O-ring seals on all of the injectors. The illustration identifies all of the O-ring seals on the injector. Reinstall the injectors in the engine. Record the injector O-ring as the part causing the failure.
- 3. IF there is no apparent problem with any of the 9X-7557 O-Ring Seals AND IFthe engine serial number is in the range of 2KS57365 - 2KS62054 AND IFthe injector serial number is in the range of 376221HT - 418442LT, replace all six injectors. Report the injector part number as the part that is causing failure. Mark the cylinder number on each injector. Injectors are on automatic call back and will need to be returned to the Service Claims Room. Include either an oil sample or oil sample report with the injectors.
