SUBJECT: Engine Starter Circuit Breaker on Generator Set
PROBLEM:
In order to protect the engine starting system's wiring, a 116-7654 Breaker Assembly is installed in the Electronic Modular Control Panel II (EMCP II) and the Electronic Modular Control Panel II+ (EMCP II+). Occasionally, the engine starter may experience a butt start that will cause the 116-7654 Breaker Assembly to trip. A butt start occurs when the pinion gear's teeth do not properly engage the flywheel. When a butt start occurs, the pinion solenoid current remains in the high pull-in level and the circuit breaker is tripped. Since the 116-7654 Breaker Assembly is not auto resetting, any subsequent attempts to start the engine will fail. The 116-7654 Breaker Assembly will need to be manually reset.
SOLUTION:
The electric starter motor's wiring system has been redesigned to eliminate failure-to-start situations. An auto-resetting type circuit breaker is now installed in a separate box that is mounted on the generator set.
