SUBJECT: Marine Power Display (MPD) Configuration Changes Accompany Release of 217-8181 MPD Flash File

Reference: Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, SENR5002, "Installation Guide for Marine Engine Electronic Displays"

The Marine Power Display (MPD) has three configuration pins that are located on the Marine Power Display?s twelve-pin connector. On previous MPD flash file releases (213-1907 MPD Flash File or earlier), configuration pin 1 and configuration pin 2 were connected to configuration pin 3. These connections were responsible for enabling the starboard display, the port display, and the center display.

When the 217-8181 MPD Flash File (or later flash file) is installed in the MPD, the MPD/engine relationship is handled with Caterpillar ET (version 2002A or later). With Cat ET handling the MPD/engine relationship, the configuration pins are now used to disable the Marine Classification Society (MCS) protection mode. To disable the MCS protection mode, ground configuration pin 1 and/or configuration pin 2 to configuration pin 3.

With the release of the 217-8181 MPD Flash File, the three configuration pins are labeled as shown in Table 1.

In order to configure the MPD/engine relationship, complete the following steps:

1. Ensure that ET connects to J1939 data link.

    1. If ET does not detect the MPD, switch data links (See Illustration 2).

Illustration 2. Switch Data Link.

b. If ET is connected through the ATA data link, you will need to "switch data link" twice. ET first switches from ATA to CDL. Next, ET switches from CDL to J1939.

Select the "Configuration Tool".
