SUBJECT: SOME OF THE TEES IN SOME FUMES DISPOSAL GROUPS MAY BE
DAMAGED DURING NORMAL OPERATION

PROBLEM:

The tee?s in the fumes disposal groups are made from a rubber material. In some applications, some of these tees are being damaged by the heat from the turbocharger exhaust housing. The damage may result in a leak from the tee. Illustration 1 shows a typical rubber tee in a fumes disposal group.

SOLUTION:

In some cases, the breathers can be moved to alternate locations that will increase the distance between the rubber tee and turbocharger exhaust housing. This will reduce the heating of the rubber tee and help prevent damage to the tee. When moving the breathers is not an option, the newly released 210-2593 Shield Assembly can be installed over the rubber tee. This new shield assembly will help prevent heat damaging the rubber tee. The 210-2593 Shield Assembly is now available through the Caterpillar parts system. This new shield assembly can be used to protect the rubber tees on any existing 3500 engine. Install the new shield assembly as follows:

  1. Place the 210-2593 Shield Assembly over the rubber fumes disposal tee.
  2. Use two pieces of 5P-6025 Lock Wire that are 304 mm ((12 inches) long to secure the shield assembly in position.
