SUBJECT: ETHER START AID OPERATION
PROBLEM:
The 143-8872 ether start aid (3408E, 3412E, C15, C16) and 193-8091 ether start aid (C10, C12) may not work properly. The software of 3408E and 3412E is designed for continuous and pulsed mode ether operation, the default setting is continuous. However, the ether solenoid valve (3E6333) mounted on the ether container requires a pulsed signal to work properly.
The software of C10, C12, C15 and C16 industrial engines is designed for continuous ether mode operation only. The solenoid valves 3E6333 (C15, C16) and 3E6332 (C10, C12) part of 143-8872 and 193-8091 ether start aid group however require a pulsed signal.
SOLUTION:
3408E, 3412E: Prior to delivering the engine to the customer or putting the engine into service, change the default setting from continuous to pulse mode. The ECM will activate ether injection automatically (provide a pulse signal to the ether solenoid valve) when the engine oil temperature is between minus 60 deg C and 0 (zero) deg C and engine speed is between 10 and 500 rpm. Installing and wiring up a switch (3T-0306) to pin 38 of J3/P3 provides manual (operator controlled) ether injection. If engine oil temperature is between minus 60 deg C and +10 deg C, engine rpm is between 10 and 1200 rpm, ether is injected every time the switch is cycled.
C10 through C16: Due to the solenoid valves not being compatible, automatic ether injection will not occur. To make ether injection possible, install and wire up a switch (3T-0306) to pin 38 of J61/P61. This will allow for manual (operator controlled) ether injection. Cycling the switch will initiate ether injection provided engine rpm is between 30 and 1500 rpm and when coolant, fuel or inlet air temperature is below 65 deg C.
A production fix is expected to occur by October 2002.
