Improved window seals are now used on most Caterpillar machines. The new seal has an improved cross section that will provide a better fit at both the window and the cab panel groove. The seal compound has also been improved to provide for easier installation, improved resistance to compression set and cold weather applications. The seal improvements coupled with improvements to the mating cab panels will provide for increased resistance to window seal leakage. These changes went into production approximately January 1, 1993. These changes are adaptable to machines already in service. See Procedure To Install Improved Window Seals And Resealant
Current seal replacement part numbers have not changed. Seals including the above improvements are now identified with external markings. See Illustration 1
Illustration 1. Locations (A), (B), (C) and (D) identify seal part number.
NOTE: Track Type Tractors should only use 5P6605 Seal, not 5P5768 Seal.
Procedure To Install Improved Window Seals And Resealant.
1Recommended due to ease of installation.
2Alternate resealant is available in 12 inch cartridge for use with a standard caulk gun.
NOTE: If 9U7239 Resealant is used cut the cartridge nozzle so that a 1.5 mm (.06 in) to 3.0 mm (.12 in) bead can be injected into area behind the window seal.
1. Remove window glass or framed sliding window from the window seal.
2. Remove old window seal material from the cab sheet metal.
3. Clean area of window seal with 9U6917 General Purpose Cleaner to remove all dirt and debris.
4. Install improved window seal (see Illustration onto the cab sheet metal.
5. Install glass or window frame into window seal and zip the window seal locking lip into place.
Illustration 2.
6. Insert nozzle of applicator gun behind edge of window seal and inject sealant into the area between the seal and the sheet metal. For best results apply sealant all along top edge of window.
7. Apply sealant around top corner radius and down approximately 150 mm (5.9 in) on each side of the window seal. The sealant should fill any voids caused by warped or undersized sheet metal.
Illustration 3.
8. Apply sealant into glass groove in the bottom corner radius and all along the bottom edge of the glass.
Illustration 4.
9. Apply sealant into the area between the ends of the window seal.
NOTE: Sealant can be applied behind the glass retaining seal if there are problems with water leakage in this area. Use only on fixed glass of sliding window, not between the sliding window and fixed frame.
10. After applying sealant to the window seal clean up all excess with 9U6917 General Purpose Cleaner.
11. Avoid high pressure wash or steam for one hour. Low pressure water leakage test may be applied after 15 minutes.
