Ahead (Forward) And Astern (Reverse) Clutches

Usage:

Remove Ahead (Forward) And Astern (Reverse) Clutches

start by:

a) remove oil pump

b) remove spider

1. Remove four nuts (1) and the washers (gaskets).

2. Remove plate (2).

3. Remove seal (3) from plate (2).

4. Remove nuts (4) and the washers (gaskets).

5. Remove cover (5). Remove the O-ring seal from the cover.

6. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to the front cover.

7. Remove nineteen bolts (7) and the washers.

8. Remove cover (6). Weight is 118 lb. (53 kg). Remove tool (A).

9. Remove bearing races (8), if necessary.

10. Remove bolt (9). Remove oil lines (10).

11. Remove bolts (12), the washers and housing (11). Remove the O-ring seal from the housing.

12. Remove the bearing from housing (11) with tooling (B).

13. Remove bolts (13), the washers and housing (14).

14. Remove the bearing from housing (14) with tool (B).

15. Remove seal rings (15) from the ahead shaft.

16. Remove seal rings (16) from the astern shaft.

17. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to the ahead clutch assembly. Remove ahead clutch assembly (17). Weight is 170 lb. (77 kg).

18. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to the astern clutch assembly. Remove astern clutch assembly (18). Weight is 168 lb. (76 kg).

Install Ahead (Forward) And Astern (Reverse) Clutches

NOTE: To install the clutch assemblies correctly and easily, the clutch discs and clutch plates must be removed from the clutch assemblies. See AHEAD (FORWARD) AND ASTERN (REVERSE) CLUTCHES, DISASSEMBLE AND ASSEMBLE section.

1. Install astern end plate (1) in position on the clutch hub.

2. Install ring gear (2) in position on the plate.

3. Install clutch disc (3) over the clutch hub.

4. Install clutch plate (4) inside the ring gear.

5. Do Steps 3 and 4 for the remainder of the astern clutch discs and plates.

6. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to astern shaft assembly (5). Weight is 108 lb. (48.6 kg).

NOTE: Make an alignment of the end of the shaft and the bearing in the rear cover, also the studs in the plate with the holes in the gear.

7. Put astern shaft assembly (5) through clutch hub. Remove tool (A). Put assembly in position on astern plate (1). Install the eight washers and bolts that hold it in position.

8. Do Steps 1 through 7 for installation of the ahead clutch pack and ahead shaft assembly (6). Weight of ahead shaft assembly is 110 lb. (49.5 kg).

9. Install four seal rings (7) on the astern shaft.

10. Install four seal rings (8) on the ahead shaft.

11. Install the bearing in housing (9) with tooling (B).

12. Install new O-ring seal (10) in the housing.

13. Put housing (9) in position and install the four washers and bolts that hold it in position.

14. Install the bearing in housing (11) with tooling (B).

15. Install the O-ring seal in housing (11).

16. Put housing (11) in position and install four washers and bolts that hold it in position.

17. Install oil lines (12). Install the bolt through clips (13) that hold the oil lines.

18. Install bearing races (14) with tooling (B) in front cover (15).

19. Fasten tool (A) and a hoist to the front cover.

NOTE: Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material on the contact surfaces between the front cover and the housing. Make an alignment of the studs in rings (16) with the correct holes in the front cover.

20. Install O-ring seal (17). Put front cover (15) in position. Weight is 118 lb. (53 kg). Install the nineteen washers and bolts that hold it in position.

NOTE: Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material on the contact surfaces between cover (18) and the front cover.

21. Install O-ring seal (19) in the cover. Put cover (18) in position and install four new washers (gaskets) and the nuts that hold it in position.

22. Install the seal in the plate (20) with tooling (C). The lip of the lip type seal must be away from the spider.

NOTE: Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material on the contact surfaces between plate (20) and the front cover.

23. Install O-ring seal (21) in the plate.

24. Put plate (20) in position and install the four new washers (gaskets) and the nuts that hold it in position.

a) install spider

b) install oil pump

Disassemble Ahead (Forward) And Astern (Reverse) Clutches

start by:

a) remove ahead (forward) and astern (reverse) clutches

1. Remove nuts (1) and the washers.

2. Turn the ahead clutch assembly as shown and remove the end plate.

3. Remove three clutch discs (2) and the three clutch plates.

4. Remove ring gear (3).

------ WARNING! ------

Springs are under compression.

--------WARNING!------

5. Turn the clutch assembly as shown and remove bolts (6), washers (5) and springs (4).

6. Remove the piston. Remove the seal ring and the pins from the piston.

6. Remove seal ring (7) from the shaft.

7. Remove the studs from retainer (8). Install tooling (A). Remove two bearing cones (10), bearing race (9), retainer assembly (8) and the spacer.

8. Remove two seals (11) from the shaft.

9. Remove bolts (14). Remove gear (12) from ahead shaft (13). Remove O-ring seal (not shown) from the shaft.

NOTE: Keep the astern clutch parts separate from the ahead clutch parts.

10. Remove bolts (15) and retainer (16) from astern clutch.

11. Do Steps 1 through 6 again for astern clutch (17).

12. Install tooling (B) to the astern shaft assembly. Remove the two bearing cones, the bearing race, retainer assembly (18) and the spacer.

13. Remove two seals (19) from the shaft.

14. Remove bolts (21). Remove gear (20) from astern shaft (22).

Ahead (Forward) And Astern (Reverse) Clutches

Assemble Ahead (Forward) And Astern (Reverse) Clutches

1. Check all parts for damage. If damaged, use new parts for replacement.

2. Make sure all parts are clean and free of dirt and foreign material.

3. Install O-ring seal (2) on the astern shaft.

4. Put astern shaft (1) in position in gear (3).

NOTE: Use new bolts for installation.

5. Install ten bolts (4). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 ± 10 lb.ft. (70 ± 14 N·m).

6. Install two seal rings (5) on the shaft.

7. Install spacer (6).

8. Install retainer assembly (7).

9. Install bearing race (9). Heat two bearing cones (8) to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install the two bearing cones.

10. Install plate (10) and the two bolts that hold it in position.

11. Install seal ring (11) on piston (12).

12. Install seal ring (13) in the shaft. Install pins (15) in the piston. Put piston assembly (14) in position.

13. Install the springs and the washers over the pins.

NOTE: Use new bolts for installation.

14. Install tool (A). Make a compression of the spring and install bolt (16).

15. Tighten bolts (16) to a torque of 12 ± 1 lb.ft. (17 ± 1 N·m).

16. Install O-ring seal (18) in ahead shaft (17).

17. Put ahead shaft (17) in position in gear (19).

NOTE: Use new bolts for installation.

18. Install the ten bolts that hold the shaft to the gear. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 ± 10 lb.ft. (70 ± 14 N·m).

19. Install two seal rings (20) on the shaft.

20. Install spacer (21).

21. Install retainer assembly (22).

22. Install bearing race (23) in the retainer assembly.

23. Heat two bearing cones (24) to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install the two bearings on the shaft.

24. Install seal ring (25) on piston (26).

25. Install seal ring (29) on the shaft. Install pins (28) in the piston. Put piston assembly (27) in position.

26. Install the springs and the washers over the pins.

27. Install tool (A). Make a compression of the spring and install bolt (30).

28. Tighten bolts (30) to a torque of 12 ± 1 lb.ft. (17 ± 1 N·m).

NOTE: The clutch discs and the clutch plates are assembled in the INSTALL AHEAD (FORWARD) AND ASTERN (REVERSE) CLUTCHES, Remove and Install section.

end by:

a) install ahead (forward) and astern (reverse) clutches
