Introduction

The problem that is identified in the technical information bulletin that follows does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The differential pinion bearings may be susceptible to damage due to lack of oil in certain applications. When a machine is operated at high speeds for an extended amount of time, sufficient oil may not be able to flow through the 1J-2860 Bearing Cup and the 1J-4757 Bearing Cone. The oil flows through the larger bearings to get to the 5L-2031 Bearing Cup and the 5L-2030 Bearing Cone.

Solution

An internal ring is being added to the housing to help retain an adequate oil supply for the smaller bearing. As an interim fix, the existing 8X-2534 Housing can be modified by adding a ring by using the following procedure.

Modifying the 8X-2534 Housing

Note: Both the housing and the spacer need machining to achieve proper fit. The proper fit should not have more interference than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) to 0.1 mm (0.004 inch).

    (2) 8X-2534 Housing

  1. Machine a 120.00 mm (4.72 inch) diameter bore that is 12.00 mm (0.47 inch) deep in the 8X-2534 Housing.

  2. Apply 4C-9506 Retaining Compound to the outside diameter of the 093-0363 Spacer to ensure that the spacer stays in place.

  3. Press the 093-0363 Spacer (1) into the pinion housing (2).

  4. Machine the inner diameter of the spacer to 88.00 mm (3.46 inch).

Note: If the 8X-2534 Housing is removed from a machine to be reworked, the housing must be reinstalled in the same machine. Also, the original shim pack and the original pinion should be reinstalled. Otherwise, the entire differential must be removed from the machine to readjust the pinion and bevel gear contact and the backlash.
