Gear Pump (Steering, Brake and Pilot) - Assemble

Usage:

Assembly Procedure

NOTE: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

NOTE: Lubricate all parts with clean hydraulic oil during assembly.

1. Inspect all the pump parts for wear. Check the bores in the body assemblies for wear. Measure the depth of the groove in each bore. If the groove is deeper than 0.38 mm (.015 inch), a replacement of the body assembly and gears must be made.

2. Install O-ring seal (2) on end plate (1), as shown.

3. Put cover (3) in position, as shown. Install the two bolts that hold cover (3) to end plate (1).

4. Install O-ring seal (4) on end plate (1).

5. Install rear body assembly (5) on the end plate in the original position, as shown.

NOTE: Two isolation plates are needed for each housing. The isolation plate that is installed in the bottom of the pump housing must have a radius along its outer edge which must be toward the bottom when installed. The isolation plate with the straight (square) edges along the radius, goes on top, next to the plate or flange.

6. Install isolation plate (10) with the radius on the plate toward the bottom and the isolation plate next to the inlet passage of the pump.

7. Install backup ring (8), O-ring seal (7) and retainer (9). The radius along the edge of the retainer must be toward the bottom of the body assembly.

8. Install pressure plate (6) in the rear body assembly. The bronze side of the pressure plate must be toward the gears and the machined notch (trap slot) toward the outlet side of the pump.

NOTE: Do not use force to install the pressure plates. Hold the plates as level as possible and slide them into position.

9. Install rear drive gear (11) and rear idler gear (12) in the rear body assembly.

10. Install pressure plate (13) with the bronze side of the pressure plate toward the gears and the machined notch (trap slot) toward the outlet passage of the pump.

11. Start next to the outlet passage and install retainer (14), O-ring seal (15), backup ring (16) and isolation plate (17).

12. Install O-ring seal (19) on center plate (18). Install center plate (18) on body assembly (5).

13. Install eight O-ring seals (21) around the studs. Install O-ring seal (22) on the center plate.

14. Be sure the snap ring is in place in coupling (20). Install coupling (20) on the rear drive gear.

15. Install isolation plate (27) with the radius on the plate toward the bottom and the isolation plate next to the inlet passage of the pump, as shown.

16. Install backup ring (26), O-ring seal (25) and retainer (24). The radius along the edge of the retainer must be towards the bottom of the body assembly.

17. Install pressure plate (23) in front body assembly (28). The bronze side of the pressure plate must be towards the gears and the machined notch (trap slot) toward the outlet side of body assembly (28).

NOTE: Do not use force to install the pressure plates. Hold the plates as level as possible and slide them into position.

18. Install front body assembly (28) in its original position.

19. Install front drive gear (29) and front idler gear (30) in the front body assembly.

20. Install pressure plate (31) with the bronze side of the pressure plate toward the gears and the machined notch (trap slot) toward the outlet passage of the pump.

21. Start next to the outlet passage and install retainer (32), the O-ring seal, the backup ring and isolation plate (33).

22. Use Tooling (A) to install lip seal (34) in flange assembly (37). Install the seal with the lip of the seal toward the inside of the pump.

23. Install retaining ring (35). Install the ring opening over the drain hole.

24. Use Tooling (A) to install lip seal (36) in the flange assembly. Install the seal with the lip of the seal away from the pump. Put lubricant on the lips of the seals.

25. Install O-ring seal (38) on flange assembly (37). Put flange assembly (37) in position on the front body assembly.

26. Install eight nuts (39) and the washers that hold flange assembly (37) to the pump assembly. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 115 ± 7 N·m (85 ± 5 lb ft).

End By:

a. Install the steering, brake and pilot pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Gear Pump (Steering, Brake and Pilot Pump) - Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
