曲轴将气缸中的燃烧力转变为有效旋转力矩。 曲轴前端使用减振器来减轻会对发动机造成损坏的扭振（扭曲）。
曲轴驱动位于发动机前端和后端的一组齿轮。 发动机前端的齿轮组驱动机油泵、水套水泵、燃油输油泵和附属驱动装置。
后齿轮总成驱动凸轮轴和附件驱动装置。
曲轴两端使用了油封和耐磨套筒。 3512 曲轴由七个主轴承固定在位。 3516 曲轴由九个主轴承固定在位。 中央主轴承两侧的止推板控制曲轴的端隙。
