723PLUS Digital Speed Control Caterpillar

Application

Usage:

3616 1FN
The engine control is used to control the speed and the load of medium speed and high speed diesel engines. The engine control controls the variable speed of marine propulsion engines. Engines with flexible couplings can also use the control. The control can receive information for these parameters: engine speed, lube oil pressure, water pressure, remote speed control and charge air dependent fuel limiting.

The control has these outputs:

  • output for an actuator

  • three analog outputs that can be configured

  • three relay outputs

The relay outputs use this information: engine events, engine shutdown and indication of engine status.

There are three communication ports on the control: J1, J2 and J3.

The J1 port is for use with a programmer. The part number is 140-2304 Governor Electronic Control Programmer. The J1 port may be temporarily configured as a ServLink port. This is done for the use with a personal computer programs such as Watch Window and Control View. J2 is a dedicated ServLink port. The J3 port is not used.

In addition to the communication ports, two channels are available for further communications. These two ports are not used in this control.

The engine control is used for a propulsion system that has a single engine and a single propeller. The propulsion system can have a variable pitch propeller or a fixed pitch propeller.

(2) Speed sensor

(3) Speed sensor

A typical propulsion system is shown in Illustration 1. The system is shown with a flexible coupling between the engine and the propeller. Protection is provided to the propulsion system by limiting fuel and torsional detection. The torsional detection is provided by sensing of the speed on each side of the coupling.

The control consists of a single printed circuit board in a metal chassis. Connections are via three terminal strips and three 9 pin miniature D connectors.

The control system typically includes the following components:

  • digital speed control

  • actuator for fuel metering

  • external power source

  • one or two speed sensors

  • eight optional switch contacts for control functions

  • an optional transducer for lube oil pressure

  • an optional transducer for water pressure

  • an optional transducer for charge air dependent fuel limiting

  • three optional analog devices for display

  • two optional alarms that are driven by relays
