NOTICE

Failure to properly assemble parts or failure to follow established procedures can lead to damage of the parts and assembly.

To avoid damage to parts, always identify and mark the parts so that they can be installed in the same location. Ensure that gear surfaces align. Never force parts during assembly.

Note: Check all of the components after installation. Be certain that the components are properly seated.

Note: You may heat components for installation purposes and you may cool components for installation purposes. When you heat a component, do not exceed a temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Do not heat components for more than four hours. Use Tooling (C) in order to check the temperature of the components.

Note: You must replace bearing cups and bearing cones together. Lubricate the bearing cups and the bearing cones with clean lubricant in order to prevent the formation of rust.

  1. Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  1. Attach a suitable nylon lifting sling and use a suitable hoist in order to position spindle (6) to the rear axle. The weight of the spindle is 62 kg (137 lb). Install plate (17) between the spindle and the axle. Install 26 bolts (18) and the washers in order to connect the spindle and the plate to the axle. Remove the nylon lifting sling and the hoist.

  1. Install the O-ring to seal retainer (8) .

    Illustration 4g00853363

  1. Install seal retainer (8) to spindle (6) .

Note: Align the locating dowel in the seal retainer with the locating hole in the spindle. See the white arrow in illustration 4.

    Illustration 5g00863719

  1. Use Tool (D) in order to install Duo-cone seal (7). Be careful to protect the sealing surfaces of the Duo-cone seal from damage.

    Illustration 6g00853773

  1. Install roller bearing cup (16) into wheel (1). The weight of the wheel is 160 kg (353 lb).

    Illustration 7g00853774

  1. Invert wheel (1). Install roller bearing cup (15) into the wheel.

    Illustration 8g00853775

  1. Use Tool (D) to install Duo-cone seal (14) on wheel (1). Be careful to protect the sealing surfaces of the Duo-cone seal from damage.

    Illustration 9g00853779

  1. Install roller bearing cone (13) onto hub (12). The hub weighs 23.5 kg (52 lb).

    Illustration 10g00852608

  1. Use Tool (B) to install snap ring (10) in order to secure ring gear (11) onto hub (12). The ring gear weighs 21.5 kg (47 lb) and the hub weighs 23.5 kg (52 lb).

    Illustration 11g00852468

  1. Attach Tool (A) to wheel (1). Attach a suitable nylon lifting sling to Tool (A) and a suitable hoist. Lift the wheel into position on the machine.

    Illustration 12g00852454

  1. Use two people in order to lift the hub and ring gear assembly (5) into wheel (1). Align the splines on the hub and ring gear assembly with the splines on spindle (6). Carefully slide the hub and ring gear assembly onto the spindle. The hub and ring gear assembly weighs 45 kg (100 lb).

  1. Use the following procedure to set the preload on the wheel bearings:

      Illustration 13g00853787

    1. Measure the thickness of retainer plate (3) at the three small holes. See the white arrow in illustration 13. Calculate the average thickness of the retainer plate.

      Illustration 14g00853789

    1. Install retainer plate (3) and three bolts (2) onto the spindle. Do not install the shims. Evenly space the bolts next to the three small holes in the retainer plate. See the white arrow in illustration 14. Remove Tool (A) and the hoist from wheel (1) .

    1. Tighten three bolts (2) to a torque of 100 N·m (74 lb ft). Rotate wheel (1) for several revolutions. Torque the bolts and rotate the wheel again.

    1. Loosen three bolts (2) .

    1. Tighten three bolts (2) to a torque of 40 N·m (29.5 lb ft). Rotate wheel (1) for several revolutions. Continue the sequence of torquing the bolts and rotating the wheel until the bolts torque stays at 40 N·m (29.5 lb ft).

      Illustration 15g00853791

    1. Use a depth micrometer in order to find the average depth from the top of retainer plate (3) and the top of the spindle. Make the measurement through the three small holes in the retainer plate. See the white arrow in illustration 15.

    1. Subtract the thickness of retainer plate (3) from the depth of the holes. See step 14.a for the thickness of the retainer plate and see step 14.f for the depth of the holes. This is the dimension of the gap between the end of the spindle and the retainer plate.

      Illustration 16g00853793

    1. Remove retainer plate (3). Install shims (4) with a thickness that is equal to the gap, calculated in step 14.g, plus an extra 0.1 mm (0.004 inch). Use a micrometer to check the thickness of the shims.

    Illustration 17g00853794

  1. Install shims (4) (not shown), retainer plate (3) and eight bolts (2) in order to secure the hub and ring gear assembly (5) to wheel (1). The torque for the bolts is 150 ± 20 N·m (110 ± 15 lb ft).

End By:

  1. Install the final drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Install".
  2. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Install".
  3. Install the tire and rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Install".
