Schematic of Solenoid 1

Use table 1 in order to determine the solenoids that are energized. Table 1 identifies the solenoids that are energized for each position on the shift lever.

Table 1
Gear     Solenoid that is Energized
Neutral     No solenoids are energized.
Forward 1     3 and 4
Forward 2     3 and 5
Forward 3     3 and 6
Forward 4     1 and 6
Reverse 1     2 and 4
Reverse 2     2 and 5
Reverse 3     2 and 6

Note: The approximate coil resistance of the solenoid is 34 ohms at 25 °C (77.0 °F).

This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the voltage of the solenoid circuit as above normal (short to +battery).

Note: This procedure can cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created diagnostic codes. Complete the following procedure. Then clear the created diagnostic codes.

This diagnostic code is associated with transmission solenoid 1.

FMI 03 is recorded when the transmission electronic control module senses a short. The short is between the battery and the solenoid.

Test Step 1. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO THE BATTERY.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness from the control module.

  1. Measure the continuity from contact 1 to contact 31.

Turn the headlights on and off and turn the heater on and off during the test. This ensures that these circuits are not shorted to the output of the solenoid.

Expected Result:

There is continuity.

Results:

  • YES - The solenoid harness has a short to the battery.

Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    Stop.

  • NO - There is NOT continuity. The solenoid harness does not have a short to the battery. Proceed to test step 2.

Test Step 2. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO OTHER SOLENOID'S OUTPUTS.

  1. Verify that the key start switch is in the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness from the control module.

  1. Measure the continuity from contact 31 to contact's for the other solenoid's outputs.

Expected Result:

There is continuity.

Results:

  • YES - The solenoid harness has a short.

Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    Stop.

  • NO - There is NOT continuity. The solenoid harness does not have a short. Inspect the harness connector and the contacts. Verify that the active diagnostic code is present. If the active diagnostic code is present the transmission electronic control module has failed.

Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Also, recheck if the diagnostic code is active. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the transmission ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    Stop.
