The laser hardened spindles or laser clad spindles will eliminate the 106-9612 Retaining Pin in production and in remanufactured parts. The spindle in the wheel group assembly may have the retaining pin "dowel" slot that is machined in the wheel group assembly or the spindle may not have the retaining pin "dowel" slot that is machined in the wheel group assembly.
The laser hardened spindles are effective with 777D (PIN: 3PR1123-UP; 2YW1-UP; AGC77-UP). The laser hardened spindles are adaptable to the 776B (PIN: 6JC1-UP), 776C (PIN: 2TK1-UP), 776D (PIN: 5ER1-UP), 777 (PIN: 84A1-UP), 777B (PIN: 4YC1-UP), and the 777C (PIN: 4XJ1-UP) truck models.
The laser hardened spindles or laser clad spindles must meet a minimum hardness of Rockwell C 45. The wheel bearing sits on the hardened area or on the clad area. This will allow the bearing cone to rotate in order to extend the bearing cone life.
Note: Caterpillar does not recommend removing the 106-9612 Retaining Pin from the wheel group assembly, unless the laser hardened or laser clad area meets the minimum hardness of Rockwell C 45.
