- Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, clean all parts thoroughly in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Illustration 1 g02244737 - If a new gear (2) or a new differential housing (9) is required the dowel holes (X) will need to be reamed to the proper dimension. Bolt gear (2) to differential housing (9). Tighten the bolts to a torque of
120 ± 20 N·m (89 ± 15 lb ft) . Use the transfer gear as a guide in order to ream the holes to a dimension of12.69 ± 0.20 mm (0.500 ± 0.008 inch) . Apply location marks to the components. Disassemble the gear from the differential housing.Show/hide tableIllustration 2 g00576671 - Install shafts (16) and (22) to differential housing (9) and in the holes of the shaft's origin. The hole location of the shafts was noted during the disassembly procedure. Install roll pins (29) that secure shafts (16) and (22) in differential housing (9).
- Install three dowels (30) to differential housing (9).
