Final Drive, Brake and Wheel (Rear) - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the tire and rim.

  2. Remove the axle shaft.


    NOTICE

    Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

    Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

    Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Put identification marks on all hose assemblies, tube assemblies, and wire harnesses for installation purposes. Plug and cap all connections to prevent contamination.

  2. Remove two bolts (1), the washers and the clips that secure two hose assemblies (2) to the brake assembly.

  3. Position Tooling (D) below the final drive and differential split. Use Tooling (D) to collect the residual oil.

  4. Disconnect two hose assemblies (2) from the brake assembly.

  5. Remove O-rings, eight bolts (3), and the washers that secure two tube assemblies (4) to the brake assembly.

  6. Disconnect two tube assemblies (4) from the brake assembly.

  7. Attach Tooling (A) to a suitable lift truck. Attach to the final drive, the brake, and the wheel, as shown.

  8. Use a lift truck and Tooling (B) to remove 54 bolts (5) and the washers that secure final drive, the brake, and the wheel (6) to the housing.

  9. Use Tooling (A) and a lift truck to remove the final drive, the brake, wheel (6), and the O-ring seal from the housing. The weight of the final drive, brake, and wheel is 13579 kg (29937 lb).

Note: If transferring the final drive, brake and wheel assembly from Tooling (A) to a shipping stand use Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device.
