Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

- Stop the engine.
Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system. |
- Move the hydraulic control levers to all positions in order to release the pressure in the implement hydraulic system.
- Carefully loosen the filler cap on the hydraulic tank in order to release the pressure in the tank.
- Be sure that you release the system hydraulic pressure before you perform the following procedures:
- Loosen or tighten a fitting, a hose, or a component.
- Remove a fitting, a hose, or a component.
- Make any adjustments.
- Loosen or tighten a fitting, a hose, or a component.
- Fully depress the brake pedal. Depress the pedal several times in order to release the hydraulic pressure that is stored in the brake accumulator.
- Tighten the filler cap on the hydraulic tank.
- The pressure in the system has now been released and lines or components can be removed.
- Install blocking plates (6) and (8) at the ports in the steering motor.
- Install one 0 to 60000 kPa (8700 psi) pressure gauge on each pressure tap (taps (1) and (2) ). Tap (1) is for the left high pressure and tap (2) is for the right high pressure.
Note: Be sure that you install a vacuum breaker on the hydraulic tank before you perform Step 10.
- Remove plug (3) and install a quick disconnect fitting and a 0 to 400 kPa (0 to 58 psi) pressure gauge for measuring the case pressure. Rotate the charge oil manifold, as needed. (Return after the test.)
- Start the engine and run the engine at high idle.
- While the transmission is in NEUTRAL and the ports for the steering motor are blocked, rotate the steering wheel to the FULL LEFT TURN POSITION and then rotate the steering wheel to the FULL RIGHT TURN position.
- Record the pressure readings from pressure taps (3), (1), and (2) at each direction.
Subtract the reading at pressure tap (3) from pressure reading at taps (1) and (2) .
The pressure at pressure taps (1) and (2) should be a minimum of 38250 kPa (5585 psi) over the pressure that was recorded in the "Steering System Charge Oil Pressure Test" for pressure tap (1) .
NOTICE |
---|
Do not put the steering system in a stall condition for more than 15 seconds at a time. After 15 seconds excessive heat will be generated in the steering system. |
- If the pressure is not correct, loosen the locking nut on the multifunction valve that is on that side of the loop. Adjust the screw in the middle of the valve. (The multifunction valve is located on the left face of the pump toward the rear.)
Turn the screw clockwise in order to increase the pressure. Turn the screw counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure.
Tighten the locknut to a torque of 16 N·m (142 lb in).
- If an adjustment is made, repeat Steps 11 and 12 in order to verify the adjustment.
- Follow the procedure to release the system hydraulic pressure before you remove the blocking plates and the fittings that were installed for testing.
