Tailgate Cylinder - Test

Usage:

D350E II 2XW
The following test will determine if the seals in the tailgate cylinder are good.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

(1) Rod end line

  1. Make sure that the following conditions exist:

    • The engine is off.

    • The hydraulic pressure is zero.

    • The dump body is fully lowered.

    • The tailgate is secured so that the tailgate cannot open.

  1. Disconnect the rod end line (1) of the tailgate cylinder and cap the line. Attach a length of tubing to the cylinder rod end port (1) and direct the other end into a suitable container.

Note: Some oil may discharge from the connection. Allow the oil to drain before you perform the test.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.

  1. Instruct an assistant to hold the hoist control in the lower position. This will force the tailgate into the dump body.

  1. Look for a continuous discharge of oil from the tubing. This would indicate a leak in the piston seal.

  1. Place the hoist control in the float position and stop the engine. Remove the test equipment.

  1. Remove the cap from rod end line (1) and install rod end line (1) to the tailgate cylinder.

If there is a leak, rebuild the tailgate cylinder. See one of the following documents:

If the machine is the D350E Series II, see Disassembly and Assembly, SENR9145, "Tailgate Cylinder - Remove".

If the machine is the D400E Series II, see Disassembly and Assembly, RENR3402, "Tailgate Cylinder - Remove".
