The steering cylinder crossover relief valve is used to prevent damage from high pressure oil in the steering cylinder circuit. A high pressure spike occurs when an outside force on a front wheel suddenly moves a steering cylinder rod.
If a front wheel would strike against a large object that cannot move, the pressure of the oil increases in one end of each steering cylinder. The pressure of the oil in the lines that are connecting steering cylinders also increases. The increase in oil pressure is sensed in either passage (3) or (6). If the oil pressure increases to the relief setting, the relief valve (4) or (5) will open. Either the oil will flow to the head end of the steering cylinders, or the oil will flow to the rod end of the steering cylinders.
