Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Operate the machine until the oil is warm.
- The machine should be level. Lower all attachments to the ground. Apply a slight down pressure. Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine.
- Remove the filler cap and the strainer from the hydraulic system oil tank.

- Wash the strainer and the filler cap in clean, nonflammable solvent.
- Remove the drain plug that is located under the right rear of the machine.

- Attach a 100 mm (4 inch) hose to a one inch NPT pipe nipple. Install the pipe nipple and the hose into the drain plug opening.
- Turn the pipe nipple clockwise in order to open the internal drain valve. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
- Remove the pipe nipple. The drain valve in the hydraulic oil tank will close when the pipe nipple is removed.
- Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug to a torque of 68 ± 7 N·m (50 ± 5 lb ft).
- Change the hydraulic system filter.
Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hydraulic System Oil Filter - Replace" for the correct procedure.
- Install the strainer for the filler pipe.
- Fill the hydraulic system oil tank.
Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for capacity of the tank.
Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the type of oil.
- Inspect the gasket on the filler cap. If the gasket is damaged, install a new gasket.
- Install the oil filler cap.
- Start the engine and run the engine for a few minutes.
- Maintain the oil level to the "FULL" mark in the sight gauge.
- Stop the engine.
