Assembly Procedure

Note: Lubricate all lip seals, bearing races, and bearing cones with clean oil at assembly.

1. Install plate (41) into gearbox housing (19) .

2. Raise the temperature of both bearing cones (38) to 100 °C (212 °F). Use heat resistant gloves to handle the bearingsand install on spur gear (39) .

3. Lower the temperature of bearing race (36). Install the bearing race into gearbox housing (19) .

4. Install spur gear (35) into the gearbox housing.

5. Lower the temperature of bearing race (34). Install the bearing race into bearing cover (32) .

6. Install new gasket (33) onto bearing cover (32) .

7. Install bearing cover (32) and six bolts (31) .

8. Use Tooling (C) to adjust the bearing preload.

9. Use Tooling (C) to install cover (40) .

10. Use Tooling (F) to check bearing end play.

11. Use Tooling (C) to adjust cover (40) until a bearing end play of 0.00 to 0.10 mm (.000 to .003 inch) is obtained.

12. Install O-rings (29) and (30) onto intermediate shaft (21) .

13. Use Tooling (E) to install retaining rings (24) and (26) onto gear (25). Install bearings (23) and (27) into gear (25). Place the bearing assembly, bearing cone (22), and bearing cone (28) into the gearbox housing.

14. Use a brass drift to install shaft (21) into the bearing cones and the gear assembly.

15. Install locking plate (20) and the adjusting nut.

16. Use Tooling (F) to check bearing end play for intermediate shaft (21) .

17. Use Tooling (D) to adjust the nut until a bearing end play of 0.00 to 0.10 mm (.000 to .003 inch) is obtained.

18. Lower the temperature of bearing race (18). Install the bearing race into the gearbox housing.

Note: The sealing lip should be facing inside the cover.

19. Install lip seal (16) and O-ring (17) onto the cover.

20. Use Tooling (C) to install cover (15) .

21. Install gear (14) and centering ring (13) onto drive shaft (11) .

22. Raise the temperature of bearing cones (12) to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Use heat resistant gloves in order to install the bearing cones onto shaft (11) .

23. Install the drive shaft and gear assembly (10) into gearbox housing (19) .

24. Lower the temperature of bearing race (7). Install the bearing race into gearbox housing (19) .

25. Install a new lip seal (8) and gasket (9) .

26. Install housing (6) and bolts (5) onto the transfer gearbox.

28. Use Tooling (F) to check bearing end play for drive shaft (11) .

29. Use Tooling (C) to adjust cover (15) until a bearing end play of 0.00 to 0.10 mm (.000 to .003 inch) is obtained.

30. Install pulley (3), the washer, and nut (2). Tighten the nut to a torque of 500 ± 80 N·m (370 ± 60 lb ft). Install cotter pin (1) .

End By: Install the transfer gearbox. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Transfer Gearbox - Install".
