ACTION REQUIRED

NOTE: This program provides for upgrade of Product Link cellular systems from 2G service to 3G service in North America, Costa Rica, and Honduras. If a machine in the Affected Product is no longer operating in North America, Costa Rica, or Honduras, this program does not apply.

Replace the cellular device (PL421 or PL522) with a new telematics device (PL241, PL641, or PLE641).

Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) 2014C and VIMSpc 2011A or newer should be used to perform any software updates.

Note: create a full Product Status Report (PSR) and ECM replacement files for the machine before performing the updates as some configurations and settings could be erased during the software installation process. This will allow a point of reference to restore the settings of the machine after the update.

Refer to the attached Rework Procedures.

NOTE: Some machines now have the option of installing a PL241 Basic radio solution as an alternative to the PL641 Pro radio solution. If your machine is only reporting hours and location then install the PL241 Basic radio solution. If your machine is using a datalink connection (J1939) to obtain quality data (Fuel Usage, Working/Idle Times, Fault Codes, etc.) then install the PL641 Pro radio solution.

Before going to the Customer Site:

1. Refer to the proper installation instructions as shown in Image 1.1.1 below for all tools required to perform the 2G-3G upgrade from a legacy Product link to a 3G radio system. Carefully check the required parts listed under each group. Some machines have a recommended bracket for mounting the radio. These brackets are not required, but are recommended.
.

Note: An Ethernet (425-6889) service tool is required to flash the telematics device and radio.

Note: All configuration file part numbers are located at https://dealer.cat.com/en/products/technology/construction-technology/product-link.html Under the tab ?Sales Support?, click on the guide for config files named ?Next Gen Hardware Ordering Guide for Construction with Config Files and Lookup?. Configuration files for your particular machine are located in SISweb in Service Software Files > Flash Files section. Please verify for any related configuration files for your installation.

2. Download the flash files to your PC for updating the PL641 radio and PLE601 Network Manager:
.
Image1.2.1

Note: When installing a PL241 the firmware should be updated remotely through cellular communication (Flash Over The Air - FOTA). Create a System Technology Service Request and submit to Caterpillar to perform an over the air firmware update.

At the machine:

3. Perform installation instructions (see Image 1.1.1 above) for the 2G-3G upgrade from a legacy Product link device to a 3G radio system. Carefully check the required parts listed under each group. Some machines have a recommended bracket for mounting the radio. These brackets are not required, but are recommended.

4. Make sure to follow the entire process until the device performs a successful communication check.

5. If the device is not communicating, refer to UENR6983 to troubleshoot a PL241, refer to UENR5823 to troubleshoot a PLE641, and refer to UENR5824 to troubleshoot a PL641. Please complete a successful communication check before leaving the machine.

6. After the installation is complete, connect up to the machine using Cat ET, and take a Product Status Report (PSR).

7. Once the installation is completed please send all required documents to your PL Technical Communicator and make sure the Radio MAC address is among that documentation.

8. Contact your local PL administrator to deactivate the current legacy device by canceling the subscription from the VisionLink store.

9. Wait one hour after the subscription is canceled and machine history is canceled. The PL Administrator must then subscribe their new Telematics device. Log into the Dealer Service Portal and validate the equipment serial number and ownership in the Equipment Data System. Locate the equipment by the machine Serial Number. Confirm the customer, equipment data, and desired subscription level. Additional information and training can be located at www.dealer.cat.com/pl

Note: The wait time may vary during different times of the day.

Note: To have your software updated on PL241, create a System Technology Service Request and submit to Caterpillar. State that you would like to have the software on your PL241 updated, along with acknowledgment of customer consent. The DSN Tier 2 analysts will have the software on your radio updated. Please put FOTA in the Problem Description to help expedite the process.

Before going to the Customer Site:

1. Refer to the proper installation instructions as shown in Image 2.1.1 below for all tools required to perform the 2G-3G upgrade from a legacy Product link to a 3G radio system. Carefully check the required parts listed under each group. Some machines have a recommended bracket for mounting the radio. These brackets are not required, but are recommended.

Note: An Ethernet (425-6889) service tool is required to flash the telematics device and radio.

2. Please check the parts required very carefully for each machine. Some machines may require a software update to go along with the Telematics upgrade. If the software is not updated as well, then the claim may be rejected. Research the machine prefix in SIS and take a look at all associated service magazines and service letters that have been published.

3. Search the machine serial number in SIS and download all of the ECM flash files.

Note: These ECM flash files can be downloaded individually or as a single package in SIS. Cat ET version 2013B or later is required to use the flash file package feature in WinFlash.

8. After the installation is complete, connect up to the machine using Cat ET, and take a Product Status Report (PSR).

9. After the PSR is finished, save an ECM replacement file for every single ECM. Go to Service -> Copy Configuration -> ECM replacement. Select Load from ECM for each ECM, and save each configuration to a secure location.

10. After all of the ECM replacement files have been saved, apply the flash files to the individual Product Link, engine, transmission, machine, implement, and monitor ECM's as needed using Winflash.

Note: Cat ET version 2013B or later is required to use the flash file package feature in WinFlash.
.

11. Once the flash process is completed, reprogram the ECMs with the previously saved ECM replacement files. Go back to Service -> Copy Configuration -> ECM Replacement, and load each ECM replacement file separately. Then select the Program ECM option at the bottom left and apply the configuration to the correct ECM.
