A new control group (actual gear switch) is now used in the transmission hydraulic control group. The new switch uses noncontacting technology (Hall effect). The former control was a sliding contact type control. In some instances, the contacts would wear or make intermittant contact which could keep the transmission from shifting properly.
The new 118-8471 Control Group is a direct replacement for the former 6V-5828 Control Group however, the new control requires DC power. The new control is adaptable to all earlier and non-current machines equipped with ICM transmissions. The former 7T-3418 Harness, which connects to the actual gear switch, is replaced with a 120-9288 Harness.
For field machines, a 127-4872 Harness (field retrofit harness) has an additional wire to permit connecting to a 24 volt source located at or near the transmission control (EPTC/EPTC II). The retrofit harness is inserted between the connectors for the transmission chassis harness and the transmission switch harness (located on the transmission side manifold.
The parts required for retrofitting a machine in the field are shown in the chart.
NOTE: DO NOT use power from the transmission speed sensor harness for the transmission switch.
1. Disconnect the bulkhead connector between the transmission switch harness assembly and the transmission chassis harness assembly. Remove the old 6V-5828 Control Group and 7T-3418 Harness Assembly.
2. Install the new 118-8471 Control Group and 120-9288 Harness Assembly.
3. Install the 127-4872 Harness Assembly. Connect one end of the "T" portion of the retrofit harness assembly to the bulkhead connector of the transmission control harness assembly. Connect the other end to the transmission chassis harness assembly connector.
4. Use 7K-1181 Tie-Wraps to secure the harness assembly to a transmission chassis harness clip close to the "T" portion of the harness assembly. Make sure the weight of the connectors are well supported.
5. Route the harness assembly (single lead) along the transmission chassis harness assembly to the transmission control (EPTC/EPTC II). Secure the new harness to the transmission harness assembly using tie-wraps every 305.0 mm (12.00 in).
6. Approximately 152.0 mm (6.00 in) inches from the EPTC connector, splice into the 126-PK wire which goes to Pin (1) of the main EPTC connector (B+). Crimp and solder the splice and cover with heat shrink tube.
7. The excess length of harness may be cut off or bundled with a tie wrap around the transmission harness assembly.
