- (1-Rework Procedure)
Rework Procedure
The rear axle should be inspected on both sides to determine if salvage of the rear axle is necessary prior to any assembly.
1. Remove 129-8516 step assemblies and 123-5669 step assemblies from both tandems. Clean tandems to prevent dirt entry during assembly. The axle housing within 1 foot of oscillation housing should also be cleaned.
2. Remove axle shaft (9).
3. Disconnect chains and leave in bottom of tandem.
4. Remove tandem.
5. Remove final drives (do NOT remove sprockets from final drive).
6. Remove 9F-2247 Pipe plug (2).
7. Remove 116-7528 Housing which is replaced by 156-6398 housing (4).
8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for the other side before continuing.

9. Inspect the rear axle housing. Wear or damage to the seal surface (30) will be addressed with the wear band being added. However, any burrs in this area should be removed. If the thrust face (31) or wear ring surface (32) is damaged, see drawings (Illustrations 4 and 5) for dimensions necessary to salvage axle housing.
10. Apply 4C-9507 compound to seal surface (30) of axle housing. Heat the wear band to 300 to 400 degrees F. Install the wear band (1). Use a plastic or rubber mallet to adjust as it cools. Outside edge should be flush with thrust face (31) of axle housing.
11. Lightly coat the surfaces of a 7I-4996 thrust washer (12) with 6V-4876 Lubricant and install with the radius edge toward the thrust face (31) of the axle housing.
12. Install the 156-6398 housing (4).
13. Lightly coat the surfaces of a 7I-4997 Wear ring (5) with 6V-4876 Lubricant and install with the diagonal cut toward the top. Use a plastic or rubber mallet to tap the wear ring in place.
14. Install 8X-8959 seal (part of 165-9948 kit - seal/wear band)(20) with seam at the top. The spring should be hooked together. Be careful to keep the seal clean.
15. Install 3 x 165-9951 plates (21) using 24 x 9X-2616 screws (22). Rotate the housing as necessary to gain access to all the screws. Rotate the housing with tapped hole for lifting eye to the top (Illustration 1).
16. Lightly coat the surfaces of a 7I4996 thrust washer (12) with 6V-4876 Lubricant and install with the radius edge away from the oscillation housing.
17. Measure the thickness of 156-6398 Housing (11) at the four 12 mm puller holes in the bolt pattern. Average the thickness. (If the housing has only 2 puller holes, drill 2 additional (10 mm) holes in the bolt pattern 90 degrees from current puller holes.)
18. Remove all the existing 116-8243 shims (6) and 3D-8422 seal (10). Bolt the final drive in place with four bolts. Tighten the 4 bolts (7) to 900 ± 100 N·m (666 ± 74 lb ft) to seat the parts. Loosen all 4 bolts and then torque the 4 bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
19. Measure and record the depth to the axle housing through the four puller holes. Average the four measurements.
20. Subtract the measurement in Step 17 from the measurement in Step 19 and add 0.06 mm.
21. Remove final drive.
22. Install the 3D-8422 Seal (10).
23. Add shims (6) that are necessary to equal the thickness in Step 20 ± 0.02 mm.
The 116-8243 Shim Pack includes the following shims:
- Thickness of 11 individual shims ...0.20 mm (.008 inch)
- Thickness of 6 individual shims... 0.05 mm (.002 inch)
24. Install and tighten 38 bolts (7) to a torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft).
25. Install 9F-2247 Pipe plug (2).
26. Install tandem applying 4C-9506 or 4C-9507 Compound to bolt threads. Torque bolts to 900 ± 100 N·m (666 ± 74 lb ft).
27. Install the chains.
28. Install axle shaft (9). Apply 7M-7456 Compound to the threads (8).
- Torque bolt (8) ... 270 ± 40 Nm (199 ± 30 lb ft)
29. Repeat steps 9 through 28 for the other side of the machine.
