The Ether Bottle Needs To Be Relocated On Certain D5M, D6M Tractors And 561M Pipelayers Caterpillar

NOTE: This Program must be administered as soon as possible. When reporting the repair, use "PI1393" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description Code. Exception: If the repair is done after failure, use "PI1393" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

Problem

The ether bottle needs to be relocated for better serviceability and to prevent fires on certain D5M, D6M Tractors and 561M Pipelayers. The location of the ether starting aid has moved from the right hand side of the engine to the left hand side. In the new location, the ether bottle is further from the hot exhaust manifold and turbocharger. The ether starting aid is an attachment and the dealer or customer may have added the attachment to machines that are not in listed range. If ether aid was installed by the dealer or the customer, it must also be relocated.

Action Required

There are two different procedures depending upon whether the machine is equipped with air conditioning or not. There are also different parts requirements for machine equipped with air conditioning and those without air conditioning.

NOTE: If a machine is equipped with only ether aid, it requires only the parts listed in Group 1. If a machines is equipped with ether aid and air conditioning, it requires both the parts listed in Group 1 and Group 2.

Owner Notification

U.S. and Canadian owners will receive the attached Owner Notification if ether aid was factory installed. If ether aid was installed by the dealer, it must also be relocated.

Service Claim Allowances

NOTE: This is a 2-hour job if the machine has ether aid only. If the machine also has air conditioning, an additional 2 hours will be allowed.

Rework Procedure

Machines may be equipped with both the ether starting aid and an air conditioner attachment. If no air conditioner is installed, then the second list of parts are not needed. Below are the lists of the Parts Needed to rework the ether aid and the air conditioner accumulator.

For Machines Equipped With Ether Starting Attach Only (No Air Conditioning)

Refer to Illustration 1 for the list of parts to be removed. Refer to Illustrations 2 and 3 1075671/">(1075671 Aid Group - Ether Starting) to see how to assemble the new ether aid attachment. Refer to Illustration 4, 1234984 Wiring Group - Engine to see how to route the 1651431 Jumper Harness (Item 11) from right hand side to left hand side.

New Parts That Are Needed For Reworking Ether Attachment From Right Hand To Left Hand:

Additional New Parts Needed For Reworking Air Conditioner Accumulation Location (when Machine Is Equipped With Ether And Air Conditioning):

Reference 1095757 Lines Group for D6M (Illustrations 5 and 6) or 1088341 Lines Group for D5M (Illustrations 7 and 8), showing the new air conditioner accumulator location and the new hoses routing.

New Parts Needed are the same for D5M or D6M:

Rework Procedure

For Machines Equipped With Ether Starting And Air Conditioning:

A. Start with Air Conditioner:

1. Evacuate gas.

2. Disconnect 1153372 Hose from accumulator.

3. Disassemble accumulator from air cleaner support.

4. Disassemble 6D3479 Equalizer Grease Line Clip.

5. Assemble 1582195 Plate on rear left engine (see Illustrations 5 and 6 for D6M or Illustrations 7 and 8 for D5M).

6. Reassemble 6D3479 Clip.

7. Assemble accumulator with a new 1582194 Clip.

8. Reroute 1153372 Hose above the engine (see Illustrations 5 and 6 for D6M or Illustrations 7 and 8 for D5M).

9. Connect 1153372 Hose to the accumulator.

10. Clip the hose to the air cleaner support with 3P2404 Clip.

11. Recharge the air conditioning system.

B. Then Ether attachment:

1. Disconnect connectors between engine harness and ether aid valve.

2. Connect the 1651431 Jumper Harness to the engine harness and route the jumper harness from the RH to the LH side of the engine, tie-strapping it to the main engine harness (reference 1234984 Wiring Group, Illustration 4).

3. Remove 1354267 Plate, 1354266 Tube and old 6N9995 Atomizer Assembly Illustration 1.

4. Disassemble the 3E6332 Valve Assembly and 7N2059 Clamp Assembly from the old 1354267 Plate and assemble them on the new 1582808 Plate.

5. Assemble the new 1582808 Plate and new 1593415 Tube using the new parts as shown on 1075671 Starting Aid Group. See Illustrations 2 and 3.

NOTE: Do not reuse the old 6N9995 Atomizer Assembly or 3K0360 Seal. Use new parts.

For Machines Equipped With Ether Aid Starting Only:

Do steps B1 through B5 above. Refer to Illustration 1, 2 and 3.
