Problem
One or more of the following problems may exist on certain Challenger 35, 45, and 55 Agricultural Tractors.
- - The top hook on three point hitch quick couplers may have insufficient strength.
- - A warning decal needs to be installed in the cab to remind the operator that it is important to turn off the Three Point Hitch draft sensing system to avoid unexpected hitch movement when servicing the implement while the tractor is running.
- - The transmission inching control may not allow smooth engagement of the reverse clutch.
- - A warning decal needs to be installed in the cab to remind the operator that it is important to turn off the Three Point Hitch draft sensing system to avoid unexpected hitch movement when servicing the implement while the tractor is running.

Rework Procedure
Replace The Three Point Hitch Quick Coupler
(Group 1)
Product Requiring Rework
1. All machines listed in Group 1 that had 3 Pt Hitch Quick Couplers installed at the factory should be reworked.
2. Any machine listed in Group 1, not originally equipped from the factory with 3 Pt Hitch Quick Couplers, but had them installed later with parts out of the Caterpillar system should also be reworked.
3. Any machine listed in Group 1 which had a 3 Pt Hitch Quick Coupler installed from sources outside the Caterpillar system are not covered under this program. Encourage customers, who own these machines, to seek replacements through the supplier where they purchased their quick coupler. Acceptable quick couplers (part number 1412843) have a lot code (an "H" followed by a four digit number) stamped in the square cross tube to the right of the top hook as shown in Illustration 1.
Rework Procedure
Parts Needed
Refer to Illustration 1.
1. On the right and left side of the quick coupler:
a. Remove pins (3)
b. Lift the locking handle (5) and rotate the lower lock (6) to the front of the quick hitch. (So it is in position to later pull the linkage out of the opening at the lower front of the quick coupler.)
c. Remove the bolt (1), nut (2) and handle (5)
d. Pull the locking parts through the hole in the lower front of the quick hitch.
2. Install the locking parts in the new quick hitch. Use the new bolt (1), nut (2) and pin (3) provided.
3. Destroy the old quick hitch assembly by cutting through the top tube at the location indicated.

Install Three Point Hitch Draft Control Warning
(Group 2)
Rework Procedure
Rework all tractors within the serial number range listed that have a Three Point Hitch attachment with electronic draft control. (Electronic draft pins installed)
1. Place the draft control warning film (1418187) inside the cab at the bottom of the left side cab post just below the "Attention" film for tractor operation. (Refer to the picture on the crack and peel sticker SENU6753.)
2. In the operation section of the Operation and Maintenance Manual (SEBU6753),on the page that explains the "Draft / Position Control Knob", place the crack and peel sticker (SENU6753) in the lower right-hand corner. If the machine has either version 00 or 01 of the OMM, replace it with version 02 under the Service Letter dated May 9, 1996 (PS9340).
Test Tractors For Reverse Inching Control - Replace CCM If Necessary
(Group 3)
Test tractor for reverse inching modulation:
NOTE: Perform this procedure on a level surface, away from traffic and obstructions, so the tractor can be moved safely.
Run the engine at low idle, put the transmission in reverse and fully depress the inching clutch.
1. Tractors that are working properly will perform as follows:
a. Slowly release the inching pedal. At about 2 inches from the fully depressed position you will hear the transmission speed clutch engage.
b. Continue to slowly release the inching pedal. After about 1 more inch of movement the reverse directional clutch will begin to engage and the tractor will GRADUALLY start moving in reverse.
c. As the inching pedal approaches full release, the tractor will be moving full speed in the reverse direction.
2. Tractors that are NOT working properly will perform as follows:
a. Slowly release the inching pedal. At approximately 2 inches from the fully depressed position you will hear the transmission speed clutch engage.
b. As you are releasing the inching pedal the reverse directional clutch will engage at about the same position as the speed clutch. The directional clutch will engage quickly with no modulation, and the tractor will "lurch" into reverse.
NOTE: The timing, sound and feel of clutch engagement is the same in forward and reverse. If you are not sure whether inching is working properly in reverse, for comparison, try engaging the clutch in the forward direction. Clutch modulation and performance should be as good in reverse as it is in forward.
If the tractor performs as described in test 2, replace the CCM.
Rework Procedure: Replace the Chassis Control Module (CCM) only if the tractor has failed the reverse inching test.
Parts Needed:
- 1 - 1366936 Control Module (for tractors with a 3 Point Hitch)
- -OR-
- 1 - 1366937 Control Module (for tractors without a 3 Point Hitch)
- -OR-
NOTE: Before replacing the CCM enter Mode 12 and record the feature configuration of your tractor. This information will be used later to reconfigure the new CCM. Mode 12 is explained in SENR5378-01, Page 41.
1. Replace the CCM as described in SENR8312, Page 26.
2. Enter Mode 12 and change configuration values to those you recorded earlier. Be sure to save changes by pressing "Setup/Select" for 3 seconds and then pressing the "Exit/Mode" key twice.
NOTE: You must hold "Setup/Select" for at least 3 seconds or changes to feature values will not be saved. To be sure the new values are stored, hold "Setup/Select" pad until the selected feature code returns. For example, if you are ready to save at feature code 11, press and hold "Setup/Select". Feature identifier 12 will appear and 3 seconds later feature identifier 11 will reappear. The new values are now saved.
3. Verify that there are no active F205 fault codes.
4. Verify that reverse inching is working properly by repeating the test for reverse inching modulation.
5. Recalibrate the transmission using the instructions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
NOTE: The hydraulic system must be warm for this procedure. The FT2220 Hose Assembly may be used as a restriction device to bring the hydraulic oil quickly to operating temperature.
6. Recalibrate the three-point hitch (if so equipped) using the instructions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
