The current worldwide shortage of antifreeze may result in the use of antifreeze that does not conform to Caterpillar's recommendations. To maintain optimum cooling system performance and maximum cooling system component life, be sure to always follow the recommendations in the above reference articles and the Operation and Maintenance Guide for the particular engine or machine. Some general cooling system recommendations follow, more detailed information on the same subjects is in the reference articles.

Change coolant every 2000 hours of operation or as recommended in the Operation and Maintenance Guide.

Use antifreeze containing low silicates (those that meet the GM-6038M specification). The use of commercial antifreeze formulated for today's automotive market, used in conjunction with the Caterpillar cooling system conditioner, will cause insoluble particles to develop and settle out of the liquid.

Mix the antifreeze with good quality water. Use the minimum amount of antifreeze required to provide the desired level of freeze protection.

Use only the recommended amount of cooling system conditioner. When filling a "new" cooling system, add the Caterpillar liquid corrosion inhibitor for a 3 to 6% concentration. Use this inhibitor at specified intervals to replenish the depleted conditioner. Use the 8T5296 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit, indicated in the reference article, to check the nitrite level in cooling systems.
