New Clearance Specification Used In Torque Converter{3101}

Usage:

776 Tractors;
777 Trucks

Description of Change: The specification for the clearance between the front end of the torque converter shaft and the retainer plate has been changed. The new specification of 0.05 mm to 0.13 mm (.002" to .005") clearance will put less stress on the retainer plate bolts. To make it possible to get this new clearance specification, it was necessary to release a new shim. The new shims are 0.08 mm (.003") thick. These shims are used, as necessary, to get the desired clearance between the retainer plate and the shaft.

Formerly, a clearance of 0.05 mm to 0.25 mm (.002" to .010") was used. This amount of clearance caused too much stress to be put on the bolts and too much distortion of the retainer plate. The former shims were 0.25 mm (.010") thick.

Adaptable To: The new 1T1643 Shim and the new clearance are in effect on 776 Tractors (14H165) and 777 Trucks (84A1018). They are adaptable to Serial Numbers 14H1-Up and 84A1-Up. The former 1T1251 Shim is no longer used in this application. Make a note of this change in Power Train Specifications module, Form SENR7157-04, page 6. This module is part of 776 Tractor and 777 Truck Service Manual, Form SENR7153.
