The secondary steering system will automatically engage under the following conditions:
- Main hydraulic discharge pressure below
1275 kPa (185 psi) while the machine is moving - Engine speed is below 400 rpm and machine speed is above
4 km/h (2.5 mph) .
The secondary steering system has the following main components:
- Test switch
- Secondary steering relay
- Secondary steering motor
- Secondary steering pump
- Transmission & Chassis ECM
Secondary Steering Test Switch

A test switch (1) in the cab allows the operator to manually engage the secondary steering system for routine inspection.

The secondary steering relay receives a signal from the Transmission & Chassis ECM. When the relay receives the ECM signal, the main contacts close. When the main contacts close, battery power is sent to the secondary steering motor.
Secondary Steering Pump and Motor

The secondary steering pump and motor (1) receives battery power from the relay. When the motor is energized, the pump is driven. The pump draws oil from the hydraulic tank and supplies pressurized oil to the combination valve.
The secondary steering motor will only run for a short time before the battery power has been depleted. Extended use of the secondary steering pump will damage the secondary steering pump. Secondary steering will be used in the event of an engine failure that results in zero engine speed. The machine must be in motion to use the secondary steering pump
