Usage:

3176B (9CK),
C-10 (2PN, 8YS),
C-12 (1YN, 9NS),
3406E (1LW, 5DS, 5EK, 6TS) Truck Engines

Analysis of returned sensors indicate that a significant percentage of the sensors did not need to be replaced. The sensors covered by the following two procedures are the Boost Pressure Sensor, the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor, the Oil Pressure Sensor, the Coolant Temperature Sensor, the Fuel Temperature Sensor, the Outside Air Temperature Sensor, and the Inlet Manifold Temperature Sensor. In order to ensure that a proper diagnosis is performed, these two procedures should be used. The procedures are contained in the Electronic Troubleshooting manuals that are referenced above.

NOTE: If a sensor has a single logged fault or even many logged faults it is not necessarily a bad sensor. A fault can be caused by an intermittent electrical connection anywhere from the ECM to the sensor. All steps in the Electronic Troubleshooting Guide should be closely followed in order to find the root cause. An ECM snapshot can be manually triggered by toggling the Cruise Control Set/Resume switch. An ECM snapshot can also be triggered with the ECAP service tool or the Electronic Technician service tool. If there is an intermittent operating problem that is difficult to reproduce in the shop, the driver can manually trigger an ECM snapshot when the problem occurs. This may help troubleshoot the problem when he returns to the shop.

1. PC-34: +5V Sensor Voltage Supply Circuit Test

This procedure is used to troubleshoot the system when there is an active, or an easily repeated "232-03" 5 Volt Supply Above Normal or "232-04" 5 Volt Supply Below Normal diagnostic fault code. This procedure provides step-by-step instructions for checking the complete 5 volt system, including the wiring harness. It is important to note, that if either the "232-03" or the "232-04" diagnostic fault code is active, then all the 5 volt sensors will be set to default values. The diagnostics for these sensors will also be disabled.

2. PC-35: Engine Sensor Open or Short Circuit Test

This procedure is used when there is an active, or easily repeated open or short circuit diagnostic fault code associated with one of the 5 volt sensors. The troubleshooting procedure for each sensor is the same and includes step-by-step instructions for checking connectors, pins, and sockets. The procedure also describes the process for checking the signal, common, and supply circuits.
