Installing Connecting Rod Bearings in G3600, 3600 and C280 Engines {1225}

Usage:

3616 1FN
Engine:
  • All 3600
  • All C280
  • All G3600
  • The new connecting rod bearings increases bearing life and improves overall bearing quality.

    The new 227-2902 Connecting Rod Bearing replaces the 192-7870 Connecting Rod Bearing in the above engines.

    The new 227-2902 Connecting Rod Bearing is adaptable to the above engines back to first production.

    Customer Expectations for Maintaining a Clean Environment

    1. Customers should refrain from performing work-around the engine that could lead to any foreign particles being introduced into the open engine. The work-around the engine includes any work being performed in which dust, sand, dirt, slag, grit, and so on, could be moved or disturbed. Fans that could potentially blow material into the crankshaft or rod bearing area should not be utilized. In extreme dry environments, where possible, soak adjacent gravel and dirt surroundings in the immediate vicinity of the engine with water to minimize air borne dust and debris.

    1. If the customer maintenance schedule or facility will not allow an environment for 1 to be achieved, an alternative must be provided. This alternative could be in the form of a temporary wall or tarp. The Cat dealer technician on site must approve of the "shielding" material being used. The "shielding" material must keep all foreign particles away from the system, and provide a safe environment for technicians to work in, that is, adequate ventilation, and structural stability.

    1. When applicable, prior to a top end, or in-frame overhaul, pressure wash, or steam clean engine and package skid and allow to dry. This action will remove dirt and debris from the engine and driven equipment and minimize the chance for crankcase contamination. If the customer is not able to perform this maintenance, allow the dealer the opportunity to perform the cleaning prior to the scheduled overhaul.

      On behalf of the dealer network, the Caterpillar goal is to ensure that the customer equipment operates at peak performance, and downtime is minimized to the least extent possible. The steps listed above are critical to the protection of your engine. While Cat cannot guarantee that an engine will not fail, Cat can take every precaution to reduce the chances of a failure occurring.
