Air Starting Motor - Remove and Install

Note: Put identification marks on all hoses on all hose assemblies and on wires and all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and tube assemblies.

Shut off the air supply at the air reservoir. Drain the pressurized air from the air starting system. The sudden release of pressurized air can cause personal injury. |
- The engine can start automatically. Ensure that the power supply is isolated before any service or repairs is performed.
- Turn the air supply at the air reservoir to the OFF position. Ensure that the air pressure is drained from the starting air system.
- Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

Illustration 1 g03356234 Typical Example - Disconnect hose assembly (5) from air starting motor (1) and position aside.
- Disconnect tube assembly (3) and tube assembly (4) from air starting motor (1).
- Support the weight of air starting motor (1). Remove bolts (2) and remove air starting motor (1) from the flywheel housing.
- If necessary, remove the solenoid for the air starting motor from the generator base. Follow Step 7.a through Step 7.c in order to remove the solenoid.
- Disconnect harness assembly (10).
- Disconnect tube assembly (7) and tube assembly (8) from solenoid (6).
- Remove nuts and bolts (9) and remove the solenoid from generator base.
- Install air starting motor (1) in the reverse order of removal.
- Tighten nuts and bolts (9) to a torque of
9 N·m (80 lb in) - Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of
44 N·m (32 lb ft)
- Tighten nuts and bolts (9) to a torque of
