Usage:
Duo-Cone seals are used in nearly every Cat® machine in one or more locations. Long seal life depends very much on correct installation without any damage to the toric ring or to the sealing faces. This can be accomplished with the use of the correct size installer tool, and by using the later installer tools that have the improved material and additional features. Remember, the installer tool serves two purposes:
...It locates the seal group the correct distance from a reference surface.
...It positions the seal group squarely in the housing, or around the shaft as in the case of inverted seals.
In most situations, the part number of the seal installer tool is listed in column 4 of the NPR after the seal group part number. And, the NPR is where future, new installer part numbers will be listed. Therefore, you should first look in the NPR after the seal group number for the correct installer tool.
However, for easy reference outside dealers' shops, the seal groups and the required installer tool, along with other helpful data, are listed here in Charts A and B. Chart A lists the installers for conventional Duo-Cone seals, and Chart B lists installers for inverted Duo-Cone seals.
When using the later installers for conventional seals, use the following procedure to install the seals to achieve maximum benefit of the improved material and other features, such as the latch device. See illustration.

Seal Installation Procedure
1. Put the rubber toric on the steel seal ring. Be careful to avoid any initial twist in the toric. Lay the seal assembly on a flat, clean surface with the toric on the bottom.
2. Loosen the wing nut on the latch screw. With light pressure on the latch screw, spread the installer apart until the head of the latch screw drops into the detent in the tongue plate. This will hold the installer open.
3. Place the installer on the seal assembly with the working edge of the installer firmly against the rubber toric. Push to release the latch screw from the detent in the tongue plate, and close the installer firmly. Tighten the wing nut on the latch screw.
4. Lubricate the toric with Isopropyl Alcohol and install the seal assembly into the housing.
5. When the seal assembly is in the correct location, loosen the wing nut on the latch screw and spread the installer until it latches open as in Step 2.
6. Remove the installer without disturbing the seal assembly.
