Introduction

The problem that is identified below has a known permanent solution. Use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The 1R-1809 Oil Filter Element has a high pressure drop. The high pressure drop across the filter causes the filter group to change to the bypass mode excessively. This results in excessive contamination in the oil.

A new Cat filter is available. The new filter improves the performance of the filtration system for the transmission.

Solution

(1) Plastic end caps

(2) Support tube

(3) Inner screen that stabilizes the deep pleats

(4) Media support layer

(5) Final active layer of media that removes fine particles

(6) Preliminary layer that removes large particles

(7) The layer that equalizes flow across the surface

(8) The outer screen that stabilizes the pleats

The new 328-3655 Oil Filter Element As is referred to as an Advanced Efficiency Filter. The new filter replaces the 1R-1809 Oil Filter Element which is referred to as an Ultra High Efficiency Filter. The design of the new element uses multiple layers of media. The new design will improve the performance of the filter element without increasing the size of the filter element. See Illustration 1. The new filter captures the coarse particles with the outer layer of media. The new filter captures the fine particles with the inner layer of media. This new design has increased the sediment capacity of the filter. The increase of the sediment capacity of the filter will reduce the frequency of warnings regarding the filter bypass. The increase in the sediment capacity will also reduce the frequency of plugged filters.

The construction of this filter also reduces the resistance to oil flow. This resistance is commonly referred to as pressure drop. Machines that regularly operate in cold ambient conditions and machines that operate one shift per day see more daily cold starts. These machines will especially benefit from this improvement. The 328-3655 Oil Filter Element As was tested on a wide range of Caterpillar machines. These tests validated the performance of the filters. The lower pressure drop of the 328-3655 Oil Filter Element As reduced the amount of oil that bypasses the filter. The reduction in bypassing resulted in cleaner oil in all of the test cases. Contamination is one of the major causes of problems with transmission controls. It is necessary to reduce the amount of time that the filter is bypassed. The system reliability for the power train is improved when the filter is bypassed less often.

The time that is required to clean the transmission oil system during the break-in period may increase slightly due to the new filter. The time that is required to clean the transmission oil system after a rebuild may increase slightly due to the new filter. The system was previously cleaned with a very fine cleanout filter but the bypassing of the filter was ignored. The use of the fine filters is not recommended, because of the bypass problem. The 328-3655 Oil Filter Element As provides the required cleanliness for the system. The 328-3655 Oil Filter Element As also prevents the filter from being bypassed. All transmission oil systems that currently use the 1R-1809 Oil Filter Element should start using the new 328-3655 Oil Filter Element As as soon as possible.
