5P8690 Fixture Group And 5P8691 Socket Are Available For Easier Reconditioning Of 5M4169 Cam Followers{0622}

Usage:

Two new service tools are available to permit easier reconditioning of 5M4169 Cam Follower Assemblies. These cam followers are used in Caterpillar 5.4" Bore 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder and 90°V8 engines, including the D343 and 1693 Engines, and many vehicular models.

While parts are available for the reconditioning of 5M4169 Cam Follower Assemblies, disassembly and assembly of the unit has been a difficult procedure. For this reason, servicemen have installed new cam followers in many engines when replacement was not necessary.

The new 5P8690 Cam Follower Fixture Group and 5P8691 Socket (Magnetic Spline) are special tools which can be used to hold the follower assembly and remove or install the valve adjuster gear. This makes disassembly and assembly faster and easier, so reconditioning of worn cam followers is now practical.

With the new tools, a cam follower can be disassembled and assembled in about three to four minutes. This makes it possible to install new parts at a cost which is much lower than the cost of a new cam follower. Since there are 16, 24 or 32 cam followers in each engine, reconditioning will permit a large reduction in total cost.

The base of the 5P8690 Fixture Group can be either held in a vise or permanently fastened to a work bench or table. During disassembly and assembly of cam followers with the new tools, a 5P1720 Seal Pick can be used for easier removal and installation of the spring, spacer and plastic plug inside the cam follower. Complete instructions for use of the 5P8690 Fixture Group and 5P8691 Socket are given in Special Instruction Form SMHS7457.
