Introduction

The information in this Special Instruction will guide you in the replacement of service meters for the machines that are listed above.

The following service meters have been discontinued. The 285-9075 Service Meter Gp replaces the meters that are listed in Table 1.

There are four options for installation that are available. Use one of the following options when the engine is equipped with an electrical system:

  • Alternator terminal "R"

  • Oil pressure switch

  • Key start switch

If the engine does not have an electrical system, use a magnetic pickup in the flywheel housing.

Important Safety Information

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.

A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.

Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. If a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not specifically recommended by Caterpillar is used, you must ensure that it is safe for you and for other people to use.

You should ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures that are used.

------ WARNING! ------

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.

To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.

Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.

Quantity     Part Number     Description
1     6L-2845     Mounting Bracket
2     1B-7182     Bolts
2     5S-0003     Nuts
2     9M-1974     Hard Washers

Note: Miscellaneous parts such as ring terminals will be needed in order to connect to other components.

Replacement Procedure

Note: Leave the 5S-9086 Service Meter Gp installed in order to protect the opening from debris and corrosion.

  1. Select a location for the service meter. Install the 6L-2845 Mounting Bracket with two 1B-7182 Bolts , two 5S-0003 Nuts and two 9M-1974 Hard Washers .

  1. Insert the 285-9075 Service Meter Gp into the mounting hole. Screw the 304-5303 Special Nut onto the body of the meter.

Note: Decide whether the meter will be installed with two wires or installed with three wires. A two-wire installation will allow the display on the meter to be read only when the meter is receiving a signal to the "s" terminal. The engine must be running in order for the signal to be sent to the "s" terminal. For the three-wire installation, power is routed to the battery terminal "B +" on the meter. The display on the meter can be read at all times.

  1. Connect the negative terminal of the meter to an engine ground. Use a black wire.

  1. In order for the meter to accumulate hours, the signal terminal "s" must be connected to a signal source. Use a red wire in order to make the connection to the signal terminal "s" on the meter. Select one of the four options below for the signal source. Choose the most appropriate option for this signal.

    1. The alternator terminal "R"

Connect the red wire to the alternator terminal "R".

    1. The oil pressure switch

Route the red wire to the engine oil pressure switch.

Note: Ensure that the contact design of the pressure switch is "normally open" when the engine is off. Ensure that the contact is "closed" when the engine is running. Connect the red wire to the ground terminal of the switch.

    1. The key start switch

Route the red wire to the start switch. Connect the wire to the "ON" terminal or the "ACCESSORY" terminal of the start switch.

Note: Hours may accumulate when the engine is not running and the start switch is in the "ON" position.

    1. The magnetic pickup

Connect the black and white wires to the sockets in the plug assembly. Connect the black wire to pin 1. Connect the white wire to pin 2. Mount the mag pickup in the flywheel housing. Route the wires and connect the black wire to the negative terminal on the meter. Connect the white wire to the signal terminal of the meter.

Note: If you are installing two wires, stop at Step 4. If you are installing three wires, proceed to Step 5.

  1. Connect the battery terminal "B+" for the meter to a fused power source that is not switched. Make this connection with a white wire. This will enable the display on the meter to be read at all times.
