Start By:

  1. Remove the air starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Air Starting Motor - Remove".

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "General Information (Reference Material)" for more information.

Note: Ensure that there is a complete set of new gaskets, vanes, seals, and O-ring seals before the air starting motor is disassembled.

Note: The illustrations that follow show a different orientation of the components from the air starting motor that was removed from the engine. Use the procedures that are given. Maintain the alignment of the components of the air starting motor.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.

    ----------------------

Note: Air starting motors for standard engine rotation rotate clockwise when the motors are viewed from the pinion end of the starting motor. Bolt (10) for a clockwise rotation starting motor has left hand threads.

Note: Air starting motors for reverse engine rotation rotate counterclockwise when the motors are viewed from the pinion end of the starting motor. Bolt (10) for a counterclockwise rotation starting motor has right hand threads.

  1. Remove bolt (10) and washer (11) in order to remove drive pinion (12), the sleeve, and the spring from the end of the drive shaft.

  1. Use a paint stick to mark the position of drive housing (6) in relation to gear case (7) for assembly. Remove bolts (13) and drive housing (6) from gear case (7) .
