Removal Procedure

Start By:
- Remove the rocker arms and shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Arm and Shaft - Remove".
- Remove the front cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover - Remove".
- Remove the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft Position Sensor - Remove and Install".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Turn the crankshaft to top center compression stroke for the No. 1 piston. Install the timing bolt in the flywheel. This is for timing during installation.
- Ensure that the timing marks on the following gears are aligned: the camshaft drive gear, the idler gear and the crankshaft gear.
- Install Tooling (A) in order to support the lifter. Repeat for all the remaining lifters.

Note: It is not necessary to remove the cylinder head for removal of the camshaft.
- Remove bolts (1) .

- Remove tube assemblies (4). Remove bolts (2) and remove cover (3) .

- Install Tooling (B) onto the camshaft.

- Carefully remove camshaft (6) from the engine. Support the weight of the camshaft during removal.
Note: Rotate the camshaft during removal. This will prevent the camshaft from binding in the camshaft bearings.

Note: Lubricate Tooling (B) for easier removal of the camshaft. Lubrication also prevents damaging the camshaft lobes and the camshaft bearings.
