An Update for Calibrating the Engine Oil Level Gauge {1326}

Usage:

C32 RNC
Marine Engine:
C32 MARINE (S/N: RXB1-UP; RNC1-UP)

Do not perform any procedure in this document until you read this information and you understand this information.

A new method has been developed in order to calibrate the engine oil level gauge. The new method of calibration gives more flexibility in the orientation of the engine.

Note: The Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7908 is for engines with the RXB1-UP serial number prefix. The Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7822 is for engines with the RNC1-UP serial number prefix.

  1. Make sure that the engine is properly aligned. Also make sure that the engine is in the designed trim. The engine must be installed properly in the vessel.

Note: If the engine has oil in the crankcase, then skip Step 2 and proceed to Step 3.

  1. If there is no oil in the engine, use information in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7908, "Refill Capacities and Recommendations" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7822, "Refill Capacities and Recommendations" in order to select the correct engine oil for the engine. Add engine oil to the crankcase. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7908, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7822, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the proper instruction for changing the engine oil and the engine oil filter. Fill the crankcase with 75.7 L (80 qt) of the recommended engine oil. Clean the engine oil level gauge and install the engine oil level gauge.

Note: If the engine contains oil, perform Steps 3 through Step 7. Skip Steps 3 through 7, if you are filling the engine with oil for the first time.

  1. Operate the engine until normal operating temperature is achieved. Stop the engine. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7908, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7822, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the proper procedure to drain the engine oil.

  1. Replace the engine oil filter. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7908, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7822, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the proper procedure to replace the engine oil filter.

  1. Clean the engine oil level gauge and install the engine oil level gauge.

  1. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7908, "Refill Capacities and Recommendations" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7822, "Refill Capacities and Recommendations" in order to select the correct engine oil for the engine.

  1. Add engine oil to the crankcase. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7908, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7822, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the proper procedure to add engine oil to the crankcase. Fill the crankcase with 75.7 L (80 qt) of the recommended engine oil.

  1. Start the engine. Make sure that the lubrication system and the new engine oil filter are filled.

  1. Inspect the lubrication system for leaks.

  1. Stop the engine. Allow the engine oil to drain into the engine crankcase for approximately 20 minutes.

    Engine Oil Level Gauge

  1. Check the engine oil level. The top of the oil line on the engine oil level gauge is the proper location of the "ADD" mark. Engrave the "ADD" mark at that location. Use a marking tool in order to engrave the "ADD" mark (X) on the engine oil level gauge. Illustration 1 illustrates the "ADD" mark on the engine oil level gauge.

  1. Add 9.5 L (10 qt) of the recommended engine oil. Use the proper grade and weight of engine oil for standard sumps. Allow the oil to drain into the sump for approximately 20 minutes.

  1. Check the engine oil level. The top of the oil line on the engine oil level gauge is the proper location of the "FULL" mark. Engrave the "FULL" mark at that location. Use a marking tool in order to engrave the "FULL" mark (Y) on the engine oil level gauge. Illustration 1 illustrates the "FULL" mark on the engine oil level gauge.
