The steering system is a variable flow modulated system. The modulated steering gives the operator good control for minor corrections at fast ground speeds. The modulated steering also provides the operator with good control during a slow turn. This is necessary when the machine operates in a tight area or at fast speeds. With this system, the operator can also make fast turns when it is necessary.

The steering system is composed of four main components:

  • Hydraulic tank (8)

  • Hydraulic and steering vane pump (7)

  • Steering control valve (2)

  • Steering cylinders (1)

This is a view of the hydraulic and steering vane pump. The hydraulic and steering vane pump is located on the transfer case.

Hydraulic and steering vane pump (7) is a two-section vane pump. Hydraulic and steering vane pump (7) draws oil from the hydraulic tank. The small section of the pump provides oil for the steering system. The pressure oil from hydraulic and steering vane pump (7) flows to steering control valve (2).

This is a view of the steering control valve. The steering control valve is located under the cab.

Steering control valve (2) allows oil to flow to steering cylinders (1). The steering wheel controls the position of the valve spool in steering control valve (2). When the steering wheel is turned, the valve stem moves. This allows oil to flow from hydraulic and steering vane pump (7) to steering cylinders (1). When the steering wheel is in the NEUTRAL position, the valve spool is returned to the NEUTRAL position. When the valve spool is in the NEUTRAL position, the flow of oil to steering cylinders (1) is blocked.

Note: Hydraulic and steering vane pump (7) will not give manual steering when the engine is stopped. Steering with a stopped engine can be done only when the secondary steering system is installed.
