C13 and C15 On-highway Engines Caterpillar

Exhaust Temperature Is High

Usage:

C15 B5R
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the following parameters in order to calculate an exhaust temperature:

  • Barometric pressure

  • Intake manifold air temperature

  • Engine speed

Note: The absolute pressure sensor for the clean gas induction system provides the signal for the barometric pressure.

Certain operating conditions may cause the calculated exhaust temperature to increase to a level that may damage engine components. If this occurs, the ECM derates the engine in order to reduce the calculated exhaust temperature. The engine is derated only to a level that allows the calculated exhaust temperature to return to an acceptable level.

A 2789-15 diagnostic trouble code is logged when the engine has been derated. The check engine light is not turned on for this code.

There is no troubleshooting procedure for this code. Reducing the load on the engine prevents the high calculated exhaust temperatures from recurring.
