Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. In order to access the secondary fuel filter,open the engine doors on the left side of the machine.

  1. Remove the fuel priming pump.

    Reference: For information about removing the fuel priming pump, refer to the Service Manual Module Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Priming Pump - Removal and Installation" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Close the main supply valve for the fuel. Place a suitable container under the fuel/water separator (7) in order to catch any fuel that may drain from the fuel filter base assembly.

  1. Disconnect the tube assembly (1) and hose assembly (4) from the fuel filter base assembly (3). Cap all connections. Plug all the connections.

  1. Turn the drain valve (8) on the bottom of the fuel/water separator bowl (7) in the counterclockwise direction. Drain the fuel that is in the fuel filter element (5) and drain the fuel from the fuel/water separator bowl (7) .

  1. Close the drain valve (8). Remove the fuel/water separator bowl (7) from the fuel filter element. Remove the filter bowl O-ring (6) from the fuel filter element.

    Note: Do not throw away the fuel/water separator bowl. The fuel/water separator bowl is a reusable part.

  1. Remove fuel filter element (5) from fuel filter base assembly (3). Use Tool (A) to loosen fuel filter element (5).

  1. Remove the two bolts, nuts and washers (2) that hold the fuel filter base to the mounting bracket. Remove the fuel filter base assembly (3) .

Installation Procedure


NOTICE

Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.

  1. Position the fuel filter base assembly (3) on the mounting bracket. Install the two bolts, nuts and washers (2) .

    Note: Install the seal on the fuel filter element (5) with the beveled side up.

  1. Lubricate the seal on the top of the fuel filter element (5) with clean diesel fuel or engine oil. Install the fuel filter (5) on the fuel filter base assembly (3). Firmly, tighten the fuel filter element by hand.

  1. Lubricate the O-ring seal (6) with clean diesel fuel or engine oil. Install the O-ring seal (6) on the fuel/water separator bowl (7). Install the fuel/water separator bowl (7) to the fuel filter element (5). Firmly, tighten the fuel/water separator bowl (7) by hand.

    Note: Do not use any tools to tighten the fuel/water separator bowl .

  1. Reconnect the tube assembly (1) and the hose assembly (4) to the fuel filter base assembly (3) .

  1. Install the fuel priming pump.

    Note: For information about installing the fuel priming pump, refer to the Service Manual Module Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Priming Pump - Removal and Installation".

  1. Open the main supply valve for the fuel. Prime the fuel system.

    Reference: Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel Priming Pump" for the proper procedure for priming the fuel system.

  1. Close the engine access doors on the left side of the machine.
