Parking Brake - Test

Usage:

988G 2TW
This procedure should be used to determine if the parking brake is functional. This procedure is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing the parking brake.

If the machine begins to move during the test, reduce the engine speed immediately and apply the service brakes.

Machine Preparation

  1. Test the parking brake on a dry, level surface.

  2. Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and clear of obstacles.

  3. Make sure that the steering frame lock is in the STORED position.

  4. Fasten the seat belt before testing the parking brake.

Transmission Override (Diagnostics)

Testing procedures may require shifting a machine into a specific gear in order to perform a test. The power train ECM may prevent some machines from shifting into these gears. The power of the engine may be automatically reduced at those speeds, which would render the diagnostic procedure ineffective. The power train ECM must be overridden in order for the diagnostics to be performed. Refer to the following table 1 in order to determine the correct procedure for overriding the power train ECM.

Table 1
Machine Serial Number  Transmission Override Procedure
"2TW"  Unnecessary
"6GZ"  Caterpillar Monitoring System or ET
"7MZ"  Caterpillar Monitoring System or ET
"BPC"  Electronic Technician (ET)
"BRL"  Electronic Technician (ET)
"BNH"  Unnecessary

(1) Service connector for Electronic Technician (ET). (2) Service connector for Caterpillar Monitoring System

Caterpillar Monitoring System

  1. Connect the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to the service connector (2) in the cab. The service connector is located on the back wall of the cab to the right of the operator's station.

  2. Use the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool to enter Transmission Calibration Mode (6) via the "MODE" switch (2).

  3. Toggle the "SCROLL" switch until display reads "11 Sb0". Toggle the "CLEAR" switch until display reads "11 Sb1". The transmission can now be shifted into THIRD SPEED FORWARD.

Note: The transmission override will deactivate when the 4C-8195 Control Service Tool is disconnected from the service connector.

Electronic Technician

  1. Connect the laptop computer to the service connector (1) in the cab. The service connector is located on the back wall of the cab to the right of the operator's station.

  2. Open the software program (ET). Select the appropriate "Transmission XXXX" from the "ECM Selector" menu.

  3. Select the "Diagnostics" menu item from the toolbar.

  4. Select the "Diagnostic Tests" menu item.

  5. Select the "Override Parameters" menu item.

  6. Select the "Stall Speed and Brake Test Mode Override" menu item. Set the value to ON. The transmission can now be shifted into THIRD SPEED FORWARD.

Note: The transmission override will deactivate when the operator exits out of ET. The transmission override will also deactivate the connection between ET and the machine is interrupted.

Testing Procedure

  1. Start the engine and raise the blade slightly.

  2. Engage the parking brake. Place the autoshift control switch in the MANUAL position.

  3. Shift the machine into THIRD SPEED FORWARD. Refer to section "Transmission Override (Diagnostics)" in order to determine if the power train ECM of the machine needs to be overridden.

Note: When the transmission is shifted to the THIRD SPEED FORWARD position and the parking brake is engaged a Warning Category 3 will occur.

  4. Gradually increase the engine speed to high idle. The machine should not move.

  5. Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Place the transmission direction and speed control lever in the NEUTRAL position.

  6. Lower the work tools to the ground. Stop the engine.

NOTICE

If the machine moved while testing the parking brake, contact your Caterpillar dealer.

Have the dealer inspect and repair the parking brake components as required before returning the machine to operation.
