SUBJECT: TILT CYLINDER DUMP NOISE
PROBLEM: At full extension of the tilt cylinder, the piston blocks the head oil passage for the rod end of the cylinder. This restricts flow to retract the rod and reduces the pressure contact area of the piston. As rod retraction (dump) is initiated, the abrupt change in flow restriction and pressure contact area can cause a hydraulic shock and noise. This may be more noticeable on high lift machines.
SOLUTION:
Machine the inside face of the tilt cylinder head down from its existing diameter of 264.0 +/- .5 mm (A) to 220.0 +/- .5 mm (B). Oil flow is improved at this smaller diameter. The cored passage letting the oil into the cylinder remains partially open and the initial pressure contact area on the piston face is increased. Production changes are in process for the 145-9900 Head to incorporate this same inside face profile into new cylinder groups.
