SUBJECT: INCORRECT SPEED SENSOR WIRING CAUSES FILL CALIBRATION TO ABORT

PROBLEM:

After a transmission repair or rebuild, the fill calibration aborts with an error message of "E-04 ? The Transmission Direction Control Switch/Lever is not in the Neutral Position" when clutch 3 is calibrated.

SOLUTION:

Typically the cause of this problem is that the speed sensor wiring has been incorrectly connected, so that the intermediate and output speeds are swapped. It is normal for the intermediate speed to be zero while clutches 1 and 2 are being calibrated, and then increase in speed when calibrating clutches 3-6. If wiring is crossed between the intermediate and output sensors, the ECM interprets this increase in intermediate speed as an increase in output speed and aborts the calibration because it thinks the machine is moving. Verify that the wiring is correct. Refer to the illustration.

Note: This situation can occur even if a machine has been updated to newer powertrain software that does not use the intermediate speed sensors.
