Front Idlers

Usage:

Remove Front Idlers

start by:

a) separation of track

1. Loosen bolts (1) and (2) on both sides of front idler.

2. Remove four bolts (3) from the arm.

3. Pull the front idler forward and remove two spacers (4).

4. Fasten a hoist to the front idler. Remove the front idler (5). The weight of the front idler is 200 lb. (90 kg).

5. Remove the plates (6) and plate assemblies from the right hand and left hand bearings.

Install Front Idlers

1. Install the plate assembly (2) on the front idler. Fasten a hoist to the front idler. Put the front idler (1) in position on the track roller frame.

2. Install the spacers (3) between the arm and front idler. Install the four bolts that hold them.

3. Use a hammer and hit lock pin bolt (5) until the lock pin makes a seat in the correct position. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 50 ± 10 lb.ft. (70 ± 14 N·m).

4. Tighten bolts (4) and (7).

5. Put the plates (8) and shims (6) in position on the front idler. Install the bolts and tighten to a torque of 90 ± 10 lb.ft. (120 ± 14 N·m). Check the clearance between the plates and the track roller frame with a thickness gauge. The clearance must be .060 in. (1.52 mm). Add or remove shims to get the correct clearance.

Disassemble Front Idlers

start by:

a) remove front idlers

1. Remove bolt and washer (1) from lock.

2. Install a 7/16-14 NC bolt (2) two inches long in the lock. Hit the bolt with a hammer to remove the lock from the bearing (3).

3. Use tooling (A) to remove the bearing from the shaft.

4. Remove the Duo-Cone seal (4) from the bearing and the bushing. Put identification on the seals so they will not be mixed at assembly.

5. Do the procedure in Steps 1 through 4 again on the opposite side of the front idler.

6. Remove the bolts that hold the bushings to the front idler.

7. Remove the shaft (5) and bushings from the front idler with a press. Remove the O-ring seals from the shaft.

8. Remove bushing (6) from bushing (8) with a press.

9. Cut pins (7) off even with the face of the bushings. Make the surface of the bushings smooth with a file.

Assemble Front Idlers

1. Install bushing (1) in bushing (3) as follows:

a) Put the oil holes in the bushings in alignment. Install bushing (1) into bushing (3) with a press.

b) Drill two .297 in. (7.54 mm) holes 180° apart .75 in. (19.05 mm) deep through bushings (1) and into bushings (3). Do not drill the holes through the lubrication grooves on bushing (1).

c) Install two new pins (2) in each bushing even with the surface of bushing (1).

2. Install the O-ring seals on the bushings.

3. Install one of the bushings (4) in the idler with tooling (A) and a press. Install the bolts in the bushing.

4. Turn the idler over. Install shaft (5) in the bushing.

5. Install bushing (6) in the idler with tooling (A) and a press. Install the bolts in the bushing.

6. Put tooling (B) in position on the shaft as shown and check the end clearance between the shaft and the bushings. The clearance must be .030 in. (0.76 mm) maximum to .010 in. (0.25 mm) minimum.

7. Install the Duo-Cone seals (7) in the bearing and bushing with tool (C).

NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. Put oil on the seals after installation. Put a small amount of oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals.

8. Install the O-ring seal (9) on the shaft. Put oil on the seal.

9. Put 2P2506 Anti-Seize compound on the contact surfaces of the shaft and bearing. Install the bearing (8). Make sure the groove in the shaft is in alignment with the hole in the bearing.

10. Put lock (11) in position in the bearing and install the bolt and washer (10).

11. Do the procedure in Steps 7 through 10 again on the opposite side of the front idler.

12. Put the front idler in position so the shaft is in a vertical position. Remove the plug. Install nozzle (D) and fill the front idler with .549 pt. (0.26 litre) of SAE 30 oil. Remove the nozzle and install the plug. Tighten the plug to a torque of 125 ± 15 lb.ft. (170 ± 20 N·m).

end by:

a) install front idlers
