D4E TRACTOR POWER TRAIN Caterpillar

Track Adjustment

Usage:

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent personal injury, never visually inspect the vent holes or valves to see if grease or oil is coming out of them. Make sure the vent holes are clean before the tension is released on the track. Watch the front roller frame to see that it moves.

--------WARNING!------

NOTICE

Do not tighten the track if distance (A) between front face of pilot assembly (2) and the rear side cylinder flange (3) is greater than 5.1 in. (130 mm).

At this time, the track pins and bushings are to be turned, or new track link assemblies installed.

(1) Torque for fill and relief valves ... 25 ± 5 lb. ft.(35 ± 7 N·m)

For correct track adjustment, use the procedure that follows:

NOTE: The track adjustment procedure should be performed under the same conditions in which the machine is used. Packing must NOT be removed from the track, if packing conditions exist on the job.

1. Move the machine forward a distance of twice its length. Allow the machine to come to a stop without the use of the brakes.

2. Add multipurpose grease MPG through fill valve until idler moves forward (toward the front of the machine) until the track is tight. Make a mark (B) on the track roller frame, even with the front face of the idler bearing assembly.

3. Make a mark (C) on the track roller frame 3/8 in. (10 mm) behind mark (B).

4. Open the relief valve one turn and allow the idler to move back. Move the machine back and forth to help move the idler back.

5. Allow the idler to move back until the front face of the idler bearing support assembly is behind mark (C).

6. Close the relief valve.

7. Use the hydraulic track adjuster, and move the idler forward again, until the front face of the idler bearing assembly is even with mark (C) on the track roller frame.
